fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Addendum 2: in the Sussex coop Hannah started making weird noises, like a jungle bird cry "Ah ah ah". It just occurred to me...is she thinking about going broody, too? She's the only hen from the original three that did not hatch eggs. I'd give her a couple from the incubator if she does go broody.

It does seem like one goes broody and then there's an epidemic

Green chick exudes "cockerel" in that stance, ya think?

After lunch I brought some tuna fish to the flocks. It was Ron's. I don't eat it, and the chickens LOVE it. I split the can between the two flocks.

While I was in the second coop I noticed that the chicks weren't clustered around Naomi, but were running around and through the other hens, and Silas. Not one adult pecked at the chicks, though I know that eventually they will let the chicks know the pecking order.

"Is there room for me, too?"

Today the chicks were going out through the gap in the corner. I won't be around to rescue them tomorrow, so I blocked it. Literally.

Hopefully none of them get stuck, again. In this heat it could be fatal.

I was thinking of how chicks can get stuck, and suddenly recalled a situation with one of the Dominiques. I went to the coop, noticed one of them was not with the others, went looking, and found her upside-down, head and neck stuck in a wire basket. I freed her, and held her on my lap for a bit.

:(

When she got restless I put her down, and she hid in the shelter I had for the Dominique chicks.

Her name?

NAOMI.
