Welcome, CC. Hope your egg is good!

Kids are coming for lunch so need to run into town and get food. Why do I do these things at the last minute?

Anyone had any experience with barn cats? We have a young one who has set up house under the chicken coop. I kind of like her and the coop/run is completely predator proof so she wouldn't be a problem. She would help keep the mice down which IS becoming a problem. If she hangs around I may live trap her and get her neutered and shots. hmmmm

This was my last candling night (lockdown is tomorrow morning).

Does it mean what I think it means when the egg is sort of 'cloudy' looking and there is a big black blob that looks like it is resting against the side of the egg?

This one is my only Silkie that was left after all its siblings quit on me. The veins have never been visible on this egg, but it was bouncing around all over the place three days ago. It's now just a black blobby looking thing ..sort of laying against the shell it looks like. :(

Look at my signature at the bottom of the post, there should be a link to a page i put up with links to various topics, there is a huge section on hatching, as i just got done a couple weeks ago with my first incubator hatch! Gave me gray hairs. lol. There is a candling link, with lots of pics to help you figure out what you are seeing. If it was bouncing, chances are it was a chick! I candle at one week and at 2 weeks, after that it gets hard to see.
Biggest thing is NOT to open the bator once you lockdown, it will kill babies. That humidity needs to stay at 60! It will spike a bit when the hatching starts too. I kept mine at 60, that way when it spiked it never went over 70. Anything under 60 will stick the babies in their shells and they won't be able to pip, anything too high and they will drown or swell and stick! Sorry if i'm scaring you, i wanted to insure you DON'T OPEN THE BATOR
I taped mine shut to keep it steady.

lol. I had to have an intervention when mine started, i got so scared and wanted to rush in and help. I guess that the chicks syncronize their hatching, so that first one may take forever! (Thanks, Nova!) I literally was going in the room with the tweezers, ................ I get a call "Don't open the bator!" lol
I ended up having to open at the end to save one who sprained her leg, and was stuck and thrashing around and the price was one dying in the egg. :(

here's the candling one, the rest are in my siggy

OK... I had enough time between different jobs to keep up. I didn't get to comment much though, was just a read and leave. SO, Welcome to the thread CluckyCharms. I have seen your postings on other threads. I hope you like this one as well. We are a trip and a half here some days.

Robin, so... what is the verdict on those beautiful birds?

What a day! The temps are unbelievable, but, when the rain stops for a term and the sun comes out, even with wind, it is nice!

There is a place in Zeeland, address is 200 N. Franklin that has a butt load of skids. Some are in very nice shape. Not the cheap wood either, but the heavy woods. You just drive back into the fenced area, and load up what you want. So, I did today. I got enough skids to put a floor in the summer coop. Albeit, it is not perfect as the skids are odd ball sizes, but with the skids, a few pieces of left over wood that I never threw away, I have a floor. I was worried about something digging under all the time, but nothing ever has. The moles however are starting to tunnel in the area, so that makes it much easier for a raccoon or a fox to dig if they wanted. Well, anyway, Solid floor now. Now I need some straw to cover it after I give it nice coat of permethrin powder for any critters that might be in between the wood. The skids I picked out do not have the typical gaps in the skids. The wood that makes that skid platform are tight up against each other. SO, I bet you know what I am thinking now don't you... NEW COOP! LOL Bad Nova! LOL. Hey, I need somewhere for those darn garage chickens to go!

Anyway. While I was doing that, I noticed the nasty thing we all hate to find in poop. Worms. Yup. So, off too TSC tomorrow for some more horse dewormer. I am pretty certain I know which chicken it is. This is the first time I have actually seen worms ever, and I am always cleaning poop off the jump up ledge... a ledge half way up between the ground and the roosts... well anyway.. I think its my black faverolle, the one I was saying has been looking a little rough... Well, she isn't laying right now, so...

I am sore now after moving those skids and putting the floor down, and I am contemplating going back for more... Some one needs to stop me...

See what I mean? I mean, how tempting is this? There are a few skids in here that would work for a floor for a very LARGE coop. OH. YEAH. I wish I had a trailer to be able to get them. I don't think I'd so much as build a new coop, but be able to put a floor in the back shed, all the way around the perimeter to keep the wild critters out, and fill the center with nice fresh soil/sand... I wish I had a trailer! LOL

Alright... I went back for a second trip. I picked up one skid that is 4x5 and some, and then I picked up 2 of those giant for sale signs that you see in the windows of closed down factories for sale. Since they are plastic coated, I figured, after a coat of paint, I have a roof, and a wall. Also picked up a few more smaller skids for side walls, some random sized 2x4 and one 4x4 that is just over 5 feet long. What am I going to do with it? Oh, what am I going to do with it... Hehe. If it weren't raining on us, Jace went with the second time, I might have put more in the jeep. LOL. As it is now, I need a serious shower.
