"gambling" with fate to defend my eggs' life (he/she make it!!!!)

Good Day Mulia, If i could figure out a way I would send you some chics in a heartbeat !!!!! Sorry to hear about your other eggs, but as previously said, the 9 survivors are a great start, out of my 22 eggs only 8 hatched , there is never a guarntee but given your conditions, I think you did an OUTSTANDING job to get the 9 you have, Keep up the great work.....!!

"Mulia: my hen won't hatch some eggs since none of the eggs fertile, i need another roo that i can't find out till now... but i think the roo afraid of the hen since this hen is cruel and more senior than the roo."

You might try what some of us do when we get a bird that is more aggressive to others. Take the hen out of the coop for a few days and then put her back. Usually they think they are NOT the senior one in the coop and have a more docile manner. The roo may then try to show her who is "boss" of coop.

I would not put the babies in the coop with a hen that is that aggressive. When they are older (at least 10 weeks) you could try the same thing as described. Take her out for a few days and put them in. When she is returned she will think SHE is the new one in there.

At least this is what works for me. Even when I have had a hen out of the coop for a few days for illness or injury the first thing a roo does is breed her. I think this is his was of welcoming her back to the coop.....lol

Anyone else have suggestions on how to deal with aggression??

@ dixie : thank you for that dixie but i think you are too far to send me the chicken.
big_smile.png

@ bloomnbeauty : wew, that's great idea, but my hen is laying now and i can't move her, if i move her then she will not want to lay or she will lay on different or dirty place and my dog or other predator will eat her egg. and i don't want it happen.
rant.gif

so please feel free to give me other suggestion but your idea is great to make her go from the coop. but, can she *talk* to the rooster? if she can, that's dangerous.
big_smile.png

oh, i forget, thank you for the suggestion.

Hello Mulia. You have made great progress with hatching out eggs. I see that you have some nice "village chicken" hens, a nicer rooster (that maybe needs to mature), some ducks & new chicks for both, wonderful. 1) When you put your new hatched chicks into the brooder do you put something on top of the newspaper (like ground up chicken feed, dried grass, etc., they also eat & play with it) so the chicks will have a non-slippery surface to walk on? In the past I had a chick that didn't make it because it's legs were "splayed" (the hips go out of place) because of weakness & slippery walking surface. 2) Do you put something in your nest boxes like dried grass, straw, wood shavings or chips? 3) Do you have "mealworms" there in your country. I feed mealworms to my chickens for extra protien. Mealworms are very easy to grow in a container at home & you get so many worms (they are a "clean" source of protein that the chickens love) for a cheap investment into the "start up" batch of mealworms. If you can get the mealworms & am interested in how I grow them (or anyone else out there who is interested), I will be happy to share that info with you. I just harvested/gathered over 4,000 of them yesterday to refigerate for feeding out every so many days. Best wishes to you & your flock.

wew, amazing, you count the entire number of my flock, total and each type of them.

1. ups, i don't put anything since my backyard never have a chance to have grass on it due to my flock.
big_smile.png
but i make a feeder using a mineral water plastic bottle and the chicks make 80% feed fall from the feeder in 15 minutes so they could have a nice *harsh* surface of floor, and since you've tell me this, i will try to make newspaper shred by shred it manually by hand, will it help to reduce the slippery?
hu.gif

2. yes i do, the hen only take a look at 3 lower nestbox and never even try to see 3 upper. so i put newspaper shred (shred by hand) at 2 nestbox and use wood shaving for 1 other nestbox and i find out that she prefer the 2 nestbox that have newspaper shred than wood shaving one.

3. ew, i once ever tried to raise earthworm but i can't even find 1 earthworm in my backyard even after hard rain and in very dark place.
roll.png

mealworm, i heard that mealworm require some more harder requirement to raise with, is that right? and they will grow become a fly if we didn't *catch* it quickly and there are some people reporting about disease carried by mealworm, is that right? and i also about black soldier fly and etc, make me confused so i choose earthworm at first, hope you can explain it to me so i can start to know that they're not dangerous to my flock since i heard many people complain about it on BYC feeding flock section.
smile.png
that's interesting to have much safe protein source for the flock since i've now feeding them fish for protein source, which better, fish or mealworm? i'm eager to raise worm.
big_smile.png

and thank you so much for putting much attention to the flock. hope i can tell them in my language but they won't understand it.

Hello Mulia! Indonesia is such a beautiful country, as I have seen on television travel programs. How hot & humid does it get there, also how cold (we get snow in the winter & early spring here in Oregon).

I raise Faverolles chickens & only a few crosses with Ameraucana chickens (these crosses lay blue/green eggs that my husband finds funny & likes). The Faverolles chicken is rare in the world & winter hardy, so I don't worry about the cold snow.

I forgot to mention that I see you are now raising "arabic" chickens also. It will be interesting to see/hear how they do for you, as in egg laying & strength/hardiness compared to your "village" chicken. Also, it will be interesting to see how the offspring/crosses of these two turn out; you will have something good from both breeds in one chicken. We shall have to be patient, it takes a little time for that to happen; I am learning to be more patient. Your rooster should be braver by then; I have a young rooster that is afraid of the older hens, but will do better as he matures.

Did I read that you have opened a shop there & have cardboard boxes for your brooders. If so, what kind of a shop?

1) With the chick feed scatered on the floor of the brooder, sounds like you may not need the shreds of newspaper, maybe. You must have seen that the newborns tend to peck at the floor first before they understand where the feeders are. You are doing good.

3) I do not have fish to feed my chickens, you & your chickens are very lucky. I think that fish is better & easier than mealworms; so keep doing what you are. I will post my mealworm instructions anyway on this topic/thread for those that can find mealworms easy at their local pet supply stores (sold for feeding mostly reptiles). The worms turn into beatles if they don't get feed out to the chickens, but the beatles just crawl/walk around & don't fly away; also I put screen on top as a lid to keep anything from crawling out & give air circulation. I have not heard of diseases with mealworms (they are grown in dryer conditions, but you must listen to what is happening in your area), but have heard of earthworm diseases, like gapeworm. But, everyone that has dirt floor in their chicken run or free grazing in a field has earthworms that chickens love & eat. In addition feeding my chickens all "organic & natural foods" from my garden & local farms, for worming/ridding intestional parasites in them I feed dried crushed hot peppers, they gobble up what ever I put out. My husband & I like hot/spicy foods but could never eat that much at one time; I understand that chickens do not have the receptors/sensitive feelings for spicy things & it does not burn them. Take care!

hello,

don't just believe to what travel program tell you about how beautiful a country or any. then, just proceed with below
smile.png

by the way, i've an idea, i think the television travel program show a phone number to dial, or email to send question, is that exist? if yes, just ask them about:
1. is there any *noisy sound* made by people in Indonesia? even when we have dinner and even when we haven't wake up they did it.
2. is there any power outages happen in Indonesia? if there is any, how frequent it happen?
3. how about crime level? and friendliness of dominant number of people here. or about police *manner* here.
smile.png
and the traffic or how people drive here.
<since Indonesia consist of more than 32000 islands (5 big islands), 1 region condition won't show the whole condition.
smile.png
but, i do know the whole part of this country's *behavior*>

you'll get shocked if they tell the truth.
big_smile.png

the temp is 34 deg (sometime 38 deg) at noon and 32-33 deg at night. humidity now is 60% (now is night here), oh, i'm too jealous when heard people talking about shoveling snow and playing skating.
he.gif
i have no winter here. never touch snow at all. so sad i can't play with white clear and cool snow, here we only have dry and rain season. 6 months raining and 6 months drying. but since global warming ruin all climates, we can have a hard rain many times when it's now dry season.

rare chicken, in here i can't even see any silkie, amercauna or other kind of chicken and that's why i think more than 90% chicken in BYC is rare to me. and now, Faverolles, that's hard to tell the name for me
big_smile.png
, firstly i even spell it *favourest*
big_smile.png
. i just take a look at BYC breed section, and ew, i'm sorry to be honest, i feel they look strange for me, have beard? and like silkie have *feather* until the feet?
roll.png
i'm confused. and that's interesting to have many colored eggs, i can only have white and brown colored eggs here.
sad.png
and that's a very luck to have a rare chicken, what a lucky women you're.
smile.png

yes, i've asked some people who raise chicken and they said *arabic chicken* is a good layer, it means they are specially breed ed to laying egg. the *village* one is dual purpose, natural behavior-ed chicken. and i also interesting in crossing my arabic with village when my arabic mature.
although yes that will take so long time to have them ready to mate.
wew, almost all village rooster is brave roos, and i sometime dislike their too brave idea when found out 1 of my rooster laying at ground in dead condition when i let him free ranged together with 1 other rooster.
barnie.gif

yes, i have a small shop, i don't know what is that called in english, sell many things, start from cigar, rice, snack, candle, bulb, cable, welding electrode, chicken feed, corn, glutinous rice, milk flour, and lots. what you called a shop like that in english?
hu.gif

1. yes they do, relieving me since i'm too busy work and college and tired at night so i don't have to shred newspaper anymore.
big_smile.png

3. yes of course they must be most lucky in here, i never heard people here feed the fish to chicken. don't think that i spend much money on fish though, here is easy to find fish, ID is a *sea country* with wide sea to explore and catch fish. 1 kg small fish = $0,5 and can be use to feed my flock for almost 1 week so i spend about $2 each month to feed them fish and why don't i just try to get FREE protein source like worm?
big_smile.png
and that's good to share us information on raising mealworm. please post it very2 instructive so that i can DIY.
big_smile.png
i think i need to raise them here and the flock can have a *flood of worm* soon.
gig.gif

and i'm really sorry if there's any kind of wrong word/ rude / offend word/ statement/ misplacement word/statement i use, since i don't know how is it to be categorized *polite* statement to people abroad/outside ID and it's hard to join and find a right word to join it in english.

studied? i just like other people, study at school when kid. but i must admit one thing that (really not being too proud/to be proud) i have best english score in my school test when i was a junior and senior high school student. and i love english cause i realize almost 90% information on internet typed in english and english is widely used all over the world (canada,UK,US, etc).

Mulia,

Your English is great. You have no need to appologize for it. If you make a small mistake, no one will be offended. I hate to think how poorly I would do if I had to learn your language.

I know you are frustrated because you would like more breeds of chickens available. Well, I have lots of breeds available and I have made some mistakes in choosing. I will explain one of them.

This is a picture of my White Crested Polish rooster. He is about 20 weeks old. I got him because he was so cute when he was a chick and I liked the way he would look when he grew up. I hoped he would be a pullet, but I was not that lucky.

31758_black_polish_portrait.jpg

He does have an interesting look, and he is a nice bird. But, in this picture you see the best side of him. If I had taken this picture from the back you would see he is bald! My sweet little pullets pull out his feathers. He cannot see behind him very well, so they just pull his feathers whenever they feel like it. I found out after I got him that any people raise Polish chickens in a seperate pen because other chickens can't resist pecking their head feathers.

Maybe he is just like your country; what you see in the picture is more beautiful than what you see when you are there.
