"gambling" with fate to defend my eggs' life (he/she make it!!!!)

@ wegotchickens : we need to try it to know the result of it.
big_smile.png
i'll do it if there is any chicks that develop *into* hen, but they looks like rooster
roll.png
. i can't mate rooster with rooster
gig.gif
.
hope the result good but need 20 weeks more after the chicks reach *maturity* period to be mated.
smile.png

@ dancing bear: thank you so much, never feel better.
smile.png

@ bloomnbeauty : latest, total *flock* 9, 2 just hatched half hour ago,

here we are. note: eggs shell removed, no more pipping and zipping at all.

38691_ye_4.jpg

pics above is village chicken and unfortunately i never have arabic chicken (till 2 days ago
lol.png
) so i can't post the mature arabic chicken but i do have the chicks now.
big_smile.png

village chicken good in *fighting* against small predator like rat and will be a good mom and usually lay small egg and without any kind of crumble or whatever that feed name, they can lay egg normally, they also have high attitude
smile.png
, the rooster is the *proud* one, won't pull back when fighting with other rooster (mine died 1 for killing each other
hit.gif
).

and arabic chicken, although i don't have the pic and never raise them, my friend do have thousand of them.
roll.png
. brown colored at all feathers. too slow and spoiled one (they are breed special for taken eggs for 8 months production and then after that peak season they're sold to butcher). walk slowly like a princess (that's my friend told me
big_smile.png
). even they can have problem with eyes if get the dust in
he.gif
. that's why the farmer or ranch owner have them in special cage/coop that have lower side so they just lay egg when standing and the egg drop down and taken by owner and have no proper life, just like broiler, after eight months producing egg, owner sell them as meat because (according to my friend) they will eat more and produce less) as for me i won't see that only from egg production matter of course.
smile.png

@ dixie : OMG, they are so cute, send me a couple please...
smile.png

@ wegotchickens : agree! the cuteness kill all tiredness and bored cause i've just arrived at home.
smile.png

unfortunately, i've to announce that all the remaining *chicks* that MAY have grow inside the eggs have been *confirmed* died.
hit.gif
i just make fast candle (candling tes) result negative, i make sniffing test negative, i make hearing test result negative, make knocking test (make a small knocking to pretend it like mom using her beak or other just hatched chick that hit the other egg to see if the chick moving because affected) result negative.
hit.gif
then, i realized that i've lost them all.

from the first 29 eggs, till 18 days left 22 due to infertile and died, and now only 9 alive. lost too much, the temp spiked too high ranged from 35 deg - 42 deg, i can't keep the temp stable due to power outages and having no thermostat.
sad.png
OMG, 31% rate, too low!!!
barnie.gif
he.gif
i can't cover the cost anymore, that's too high loss...

what should i do next? should i set again? power outages and lack of thermostat will ruin them all again, and lack of time of course to control the temp (as thermostat) and to provide kerosene lamp when power outages happen (i can't light the lamp when i'm at campus of course, home to campus = almost 2 hours.)

Mulia your village chickens sound similar to what we call Game birds. This is the description given at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamecock

And
the arabic hens sound like what we call battery chickens here. A practice that most of us deplore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_cage

"Mulia
: what should i do next?" I look at that this way. You have 9 more chickens than when you started. And as time goes by you will gain more experience at hatching. I understand the lack of time though. Is there any chance that you could get some one in the village to take care of them when you can't be there? Maybe you could train some one younger on what to do and have them watch over your eggs.

If you were to try again.

A thought might be to use as wide a piece of rock as you can fit in the bator, in the bottom, or a LOT of sand in the bottom - this would provide a more reliable Heatsink - heat holder, for times when the power goes out.

When my great grandparents had no heat at night they would warm bricks or large flat stones in a fire, cool them slightly, wrap them in a blanket and place them under their feet. If you can make a fire and keep stones or bricks near it to heat in it if there is need, you might be able to place them under or around your incubator in long power outtages, there would be some help, and less heat needed from things that smoke.

Mulia, considering the odds of your adventure succeeding at all, I think 9 chicks is great. It was a learning experience for you. Focus on school and raising baby chicks for a while. Learn more or find better supplies. Then try again when school is out again. That would be my advice.

Chickens are great, but school is an investment in your long-term future. You can go back to the chickens any time. Also, you may learn something that will help with your next incubation.
Plus, you will be kept very busy as you raise these and see what you like or don't like about the arabic babies. Finish your coop and see if a village hen wants to hatch some eggs later on.

Most of all, remember 30% is way better than 0%!!
You had some terrible challenges and you overcame them.
We're are all proud and delighted to have been along with you on this 'wild ride'!

@ walkswithdog : ew, but the stone, brick and sand won't fit into bator, even i have space problem to put the thermohygro, you can see that the thermohygro is big enough in the pic.

and about warming or burn bricks/stone i think that's not a kind of work that i can do here due to time and much trouble.

but i really appreciate any solution you offered to me and yes, i use big stone that you can see in pic, i force many eggs to *get away* to give space to the stone. thank you so much WWD.
smile.png

@ bloomnbeauty : aw, that's very useful and rich information.

i've read it all, the gamecock almost resemble with every cock i see in here tough.
roll.png

but we don't make a special breed for it, just let them mate with every hen and don't know what the result.
big_smile.png

wew, the arabic chicken resemble with that in battery cage but arabic chick is brown colored not white one.

unfortunately, i don't have anyone to help keeping it. i just live with my mother inside this house and we were busy at morning and afternoon and the only *free time* is night, i even go to campus everyday to follow class and come home at late night (22.00 PM) .

i'm too confused now to decided what to do after this...... any suggestion more?

but, i'll raise the 9 chicks and POD
big_smile.png
and make sure they will laying (except the rooster of course, i can't force him laying
big_smile.png
) and i'll try to mate the hen (if there's any
hu.gif
) with my *village rooster* to see *what happened*.

but i hate this rooster, he can't do his job. grr
rant.gif
, i just scramble an egg that laid by my hen 2 days ago and i found out it's infertile. i've 1 thing in my mind, the roo fear of the hen since if i'm not wrong, my roo is younger than my hen, the hen is very cruel and aggresive, she didn't afraid of any chicken and duck and muscovy in my backyard.
roll.png
she even peck the roo.
th.gif

confuse and confuse
hu.gif

thank you so much bloomnbeauty... i appreciate it all
smile.png

Quote:
yap, i think that's good idea.
smile.png

yay, i've finished the coop for more than 2 weeks i tough.
here, i post it again.

38691_image048.jpg

38691_wew_1.jpg

38691_wew.jpg

that's right, i'm thinking that it would take much times for me to raise them. and i still confuse to raise kind of *spoiled* baby, if they were village chicken chicks i won't afraid about raising them since they were so strong and easily survived against my environment.

and with this arabic babies i think i need a big cardboard box to keep them inside until 3 weeks to have them strong enough to be free ranged. should i free ranged them or join them inside the coop with risk of fight with my cruel hen and rooster?

and my hen won't hatch some eggs since none of the eggs fertile, i need another roo that i can't find out till now... but i think the roo afraid of the hen since this hen is cruel and more senior than the roo.
hu.gif

yap, i really love the chicks since that's very hard to keep them alive for 21 days.
barnie.gif
i always happy when i touch and put them on my hand since i realize that's not easy for me to have them like now, i think you can imagine if you have work so hard for long time to buy a car and you can feel of *having* it and love it although the car isn't so good at all since that's bought buy your hard work and sweat.
smile.png

and POD, why duck is more not cooperative to people than chick? all my chick cooperative better than my duck and now even arabic chicks more cooperative than POD.
hu.gif
huff. if only (s)he know how hard to keep her allive and open the shell slowly to make sure she's alive she will regret not to be cooperative enough with me.
smile.png

thank you wegotchickens for valuable suggestion and great advice.
