Well I had decided to buy tomato transplants this year rather than starting from seed, but yesterday I found some seed from last year, so I went ahead and potted them. Not sure if they’ll germinate, but thought I’d give it a shot. If they don’t, I’ll just get the transplants as planned. I also ordered the tomatillo seed as well as spaghetti squash and some Asian type eggplant. Any other seed I need I’ll be able to get locally.
The chickens did a good job cleaning out the old, abandoned garden site, but I still need to do a bit more if it ever stops raining. It’s been so warm that it’s hard to remember that it’s still only January so I have time!

Pretty good strategy. So far I've been able to plant at least 1 of each type of tomato I start from seed but I also get transplants as there's hybrids like SunGold that I'm keen on and they're always locally available by May.
