hi:frow
we go to florida every winter so i start some things down there and then bring back up here to pa but then have to wait til the last frost to set them out, the tomatoes started producing tho(patio type) as soon as i could i started lettuce(deer ate) so i just let them have it and husband put a electric fence to keep the out of the other things but like you i was late but like i said, happy with what 'm getting, enough to freeze and will be canning before long if this weather allows me too, its been crazy here, hotter than blue blazes then storms blow up and it pours. i have several chicken tractors, different kinds in different tractors i also love the garden and chickens i think we all do or we wouldn't be here:D
That's for sure, I do love my chickens! I let them have the garden all winter, I lock them out about 60 days before planting, they get so mad at me! The kale plants are huge by the fall so they can nibble on that freely and it doesn't hurt the plants, we have plenty for all of us. It also gives them a little chicken sized forest to hide in.

What tomatoes do you plant? I always make sure to have at least one cherry tomato plant because even in a cold year I'll have some, haha! The big ones are Brandywine, smaller ones I can't remember the name of, some Czech heirloom that taste a little like Brandywine, the plants look similar, but the fruit is smaller and earlier. I don't prune them so the plants get huge, I know they look messy but I don't mind.

i have one volunteer grape tomato that comes up every year, have no idea where it came from, never planted a grape but we love it, usually three or four come up after husband tills, we always leave them but i plant peach and pineapple for myself and delicious for husband, this year i have romas too and a little six inch tall yellow tomato plant i bought a the livestock auction(if i like the taste, will keep seeds) i don't plant kale, not a fan, i do plant mustard greens, turnip greens and rape, i'm a southern so those i love of course:lol: we have watermelons growing and corn and sweet potato's and beets, carrots, radishes, green and yellow beans, kentucky blue wonder beans, and dragon tongues and lettuce of course and okra, i guess a mixture of what we like. my peas are done, its too hot up here right now for them unless its the southern peas which this year i didn't plant, next year i'll plant some more but first i want to use up what i have in the freezer
i don't let my chickens out to free range, they have to settle for us moving the chicken tractor around in the pasture, we have critters around that would love to eat them, just had to dispose of a couple of coons that killed a couple of young hen chicks i was raising for the flock:mad:

My tomatoes are looking great this year but my cukes, not so much. They have tons of flowers, just no fruit. :idunno Same with the watermelon. I've never grown watermelon but I would imagine they should have some sign of fruit by this point.

I see bees in the garden quite a bit (I won't let DH mow my clover, I overseed it just for the bees :lau) so I don't get it.

Brandywine are my favorite - I just love their flavor. They are coming in quite nicely this year. No blight yet, they had it bad last year.

I also tried some type of canning tomato for the first time, they are growing great. My friend & I split them so I don't have the tag so I don't know what they are!

Check to make sure you are getting female blossoms. In my experience it is common to get only male blossoms at the beginning of the season. This is common with cantaloupe, cucumbers, squash and watermelon. My cantaloupe are blooming right now but I don't recall seeing any female blossoms.

Yes, they do seem to be all/mostly males. I guess maybe I'm just too impatient. It feels like I should have cukes by now! My vines are 4/5 feet long & tons of flowers - just no females I guess.
Yours are doing much better than mine. Mine froze on June 10th and are just now 6" to 8" long and zero blossoms of any kind.
