Big round bales of brome hay go for around 35$ per bale. Most weigh about a ton and it's the size that most livestock farmers use around here.

We let an Amish farmer in our neighborhood cut and bale our pasture hay. We usually average about 12 bales per year of the big 5 foot bales and since we don't have any livestock other than our chickens, we trade him oat or wheat straw for the hay.

Score score. We get the approx. 9 acre pasture mowed and get straw out of it that we use over the winter months for mud control and for nesting material and bedding for the chickens.

Maybe in farm country the prices are lower,,,,, but we here in Chicago Metro are City Slickers :frow ... The prices reflected are retail prices per bale, not large quantities. Am sure that the peeps that maintain horse stables purchase large quantities and pay less per bale than $8.
I have never seen straw at less than $6 per bale around here. It has no significant nutritional value,,, only bedding.
With everything going up in price,,, even the straw for Halloween will probably be pricey this year.
In years past,, I have picked up straw bales that peeps would set curbside. (after Halloween decor was removed).. I only use it to cover my flower beds for winter because it was usually quite wet at that point.

So he pays a lil more for straw. Flip-side of coin,,,, does not pay anything for heating his home.. Could live without AC, as all the indigenous peeps that lived there for centuries.
If I was to respond to that persons question,,, I would suggest that he use all the grass clippings instead of straw. :old ,, And if he really luvd:love his turkeys,,, should get a few bales of that Maui Wowie:gig

Ha, the AC need depends on where you live. A friend's daughter was teaching at a poor Christian school until covid. She said it was hot and humid on that side of the island and you couldn't sleep unless you had AC. When they flew in to visit toilet paper was brought to the island because it was$4 a roll. The SIL was a tour helicopter pilot. He was born in Hawaii. After covid hit they moved to Tennessee near her sister.

Yes the turkey poster was told about grass and such. But not about Maui wowie :gig
