Thanks for confirming this. I've always heard that raw chicken manure is too "hot" (too high nitrogen) to use as fertilizer. Instead, it should be composted first.
I know that beans are very sensitive to herbicides and given that they fix nitrogen and need less than many other plants, it looks like you've run into the same effect here.
Trick for testing unknown soil... If you bring in outside soil and want to know if it contains any herbicides, plant some bean seeds in it and try to germinate them. They will either not germinate or will look rather sickly when they come up.
