Gas Stations

You cannot pump your own gas in Oregon, unless it is at one of the card lock stations that fleets use. When I grew up almost every kid had a job pumping gas at least once. Now full service seems to have vanished.

Now a days, the only time I've ever seen some one get gas pumped for them is if they have a handicapped plate and cannot get out of their car to pump it themselves.
I remember when gas stations had full serve and self serve. Those were the good old days when gas was cheap and the gossip was good!

Yes children...full-service gas stations really use to exist.

Some stations even gave some cool gifts with a 10-gallon
purchase or a fill up. My mother still has a complete set of
drinking glass's from Sinclaire. (I think)

How about those S&H green stamps that you use to get at
the station and some stores? Save so many books, get your
choice.

Even some cigarettes came with some sort of coupons for gifts.

My brother worked at one of those full serve stations. I never did,
but remember hanging out there and "helping".

Spook

Spook

In my hometown they still pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your tire pressure. Its a small town gas station surrounded by the big chains. Its always reminded me of that Alan Jackson song "Little Man"

The reason that alot of the little stations will pump your gas is because that way, it makes it alot harder for customers to drive off without paying.

I think we only have like one of those around here anymore.. its a shame. :(

Oh I remember those days Spook, those green book coupons.

Remember that metal oil spout, that we used to pour out of oil containers? The ding ding of the rubber hose when you drive up.
Greasy walls, smell of oil and tires.

Old tin signs. Wigley's gums, hard candies and old coca cola soda pop that you had metal caps..you had to remove the caps by jambing the tops on a can opener gadget on the side of the pop machine.

The numbers of gallons and price was rolled around again and again, none of that digital type faces. And the long arm switch to turn on your gas.

I remember going to Stuckey's because mom loves those pecan rolls....good memories of the highway, munching on those delicious rolls.

As I read your post, I had some sweet memories, too. Thank you for that.
