Gas Stations

You're welcome, Kathy!

I remember those Mobil horse signs....those were my favorite signs because it had a horse on it. Yeah I was horse crazy girl back then!

I do remember guys wearing uniform with a name tag stitched into them. either they have a bow tie or open at throat on their shirts. They walk out with a spring in their steps, never complained and always with a smile! Now you get disgruntled employees that got the face saying "Get it yourself" kind of expression.

Remember those old counters and the adding machine, I remember the icky light green or tan in color. Credit cards were almost non existent back in those days, it is strictly cash, rarely "credit" if the mom and pop store knows who you are and how good you were about paying back the credit.

And if you are handicapped, you push a button and the attendant will come out to pump for you, at no charge.

I remember full service stations. You paid a premium to get that service, but it was probably nice. Full serve had a different price, on the sign. :)

My Grandfather owned a full service station in the 50's and 60's. My Dad worked there as a teen. His favorite story was... An elderly lady came one day and as my dad was filling her car with gas, she asked him to take the winter air out of the tires and replace with summer air. My dad went to argue with her on why that was unnecessary when my grandfather pulled him to the side and said "The customer is always right, do as she asked." So my dad had to flatten all the tires and refill them. My dad said the best part was the 10 cent tip.

We should go back to full service option. Give people some jobs and have less drive offs.

Remember those guys wearing those metal coin thingys on their belts? They would give you the exact change and I happened to stumble on the local newspaper about the history of our town, guess what? Gas Stations! Some didn't have money machines so the men took care of that and they don't always carry around a large wad of cash in their pockets.

I was smiling while I was reading it........green book stamps, yep! Ice cold pop that you can dunk your hand into it to get the coldest pop there is!

Orange and blue signs I remember....GULF

Star..........Texaco, also green and white I believe

blue and yellow, Sunoco

I think we only have like one of those around here anymore.. its a shame.

I think it's the same here. There's one in town that I know used to be full service, but it got taken over by Citgo so I'm not sure anymore. It's quite expensive so I haven't been there in forever. But I remember going there as a kid and the guys would come out and politely ask what kind of gas you wanted, start it pumping, and then check your oil and wash all your windows...

Our store we owned when I was a teen was not full service but if anyone pulled up to the pump an honked the horn we would go out an pump the gas for them.

The reason you don't see it much anymore is cause stores are not making a profit on gas. In the 50s stores made 2 or 3 cents on the gallon. Now they are still making 2 or 3 cents on the gallon. To pay the bills they need you to get out an go in an hopefully buy a coke an a snickers. Only way you do that is if you pump your own gas an have to come in an pay..
