Gas Stations

In the late 70's we had colored flags at the gas stations green was all the gas you want yellow was like 10 gallons andred was no gas. It was all a scam looking back on it now.

You cannot pump your own gas in Oregon but a kid with no official training can.

Something that is hard for Americans to comprehend, but in Italy they have 24 hour self service gas stations that are unmanned all evening and night. No employees present from around 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. You just pay, pump and go.

With liability issues.that would never fly here.

About 10 years ago there was an old man that still would pump your gas and clean your windows near my home. It is a family run gas station/garage and he was the father and original owner. I remember he used to always give my brother and I a Tootsie Roll when we came by. Sadly he died a long time ago, but I still have that memory.

Why would this be hard to comprehend?

The stations here are looking for a lot of profit.. we have 24 hr stations here, but they're manned 24 hrs because they make more money with the items they sell inside. We also have 24 hr completely unmanned stations, but you have to pay for a membership or a fee to use them.. they're used by companies, police depts etc.. but it isn't frugal for the general public to use them.

Some states require the station to pump gas, but the majority of the states don't.

I remember the full service filling stations! I started driving as they started to phase out.

In those days gas stations were gas stations, not snack shops. If they had a candy bar or gum it was rare. Then they brought in dispensing machines for those and cigarettes. A lady never got out of the car except to stretch her legs. The restrooms were usually pretty nasty, mostly mechanics used them, and the stations that had them kept them locked so you would have to ask for the key.
