My wife made juice last night with the Jack Lalane juicer. She put in apples, oranges, lemons, celery, carrots, cucumber, ginger, blueberries, and broccoli. I put all the ground remains in a bowl and poured kefir over it, sprinkled some bird seed on it, and took it out to the chickens. They seemed to like it, especially since it was covered with kefir; they love kefir.
Was it alright to give them those shredded orange and lemon parts. Seems like I read somewhere on BYC that you're not supposed to give them citrus fruit. Is that right?

as far as I know, citrus isn't good for them. I don't think broccoli is good either. hope they're alright!

I give mine broccoli all the time. In the summer they destroyed 4 broccoli plants. Picked them clean! lol

I don't know about chickens, but I do know some birds should not have citrus because it can cause a build up of excess iron in the bird's system. I do know that most info I've found on treats says not to feed citrus, but don't really say why.

I would think a little probably won't hurt.

citrus is not good to be fed because of the acidity which will cause digestive problems and give them stomach aches. however, before I knew this I often used to feed one of my chickens citrus fruits because she was the only one who like the taste of them (coincidence that her name happens to be clementine

) and she was totally fine.
I think broccoli is bad for chickens because it will give them gas and birds are unable to pass gas

I've fed all those foods to my parrot for 20 years, without a problem. He eats a balanced diet, not an excess of any one food. Lots of parrot breeders and owners feed a mash diet that includes a small amount of citrus, along with the other ingredients. I wouldn't have a problem with my chickens eating any of the foods my parrot eats. I don't see that a small amount of citrus is that much different than feeding tomatoes and pineapple, that one of the posts I've read saying not to feed citrus has no problem with. They are all acidic foods.
