Genetic Problems Associated with Certain Breeds?

You can artificially inseminate chickens??

Just thinking about how that might be done has me laughing!!!

Why? Of course you can. Pretty easy to do. There are You-Tube videos that will show you how. Personallyh I prefer my birds reproducing naturally, but would make exceptions for specific reasons on individual birds.

AI on a chicken isn't something I'd look forward to doing, exactly. But for specific birds and problems, is a real solution. Some really won't reproduce well for various reasons. Better to do that than let that bird's genes be unavailable.

Nearly every chicken you have ever eaten (at a restaurant) or purchased (at a grocery) was the result of AI.

As to the original question, which I do not believe was ever answered (except by way of the lethal genes),

Yes, there are certain genetic problems associated with some breeds beyond the lethal genes already mentioned.

Malays have leg problems (called going down on the hocks). Which is also seen in breeds that have Malay in their background such as Cornish. It is believed that this is a result of the way their bodies do not absorb folic acid.

Many Game breeds also have the genetic disposition to 'the shakes.' This is very similar to Parkinson's Disease in humans.

Many of the large Oriental breeds also have heart issues.

Very interesting, saladin.

Have you heard of any problems related to Leghorns or Silver-Laced Sebrights? My bantie is awfully small, and I wonder whether she might have dwarfism. I think I read it's linked to Gold-Laced Sebrights, but she's a silver.

Really? I was thinking of trying to mate her (the silver-laced Sebright) with the male (SLS)that is at the farm where she came from. I as thinking of bringing him here to my home. Do you think it would be pretty much pointless to try?

Do you think the bigger full-size roosters may hurt her if she's not kept separate from them at all times?
