I don't mean to spoil the party and all, but genetics are learned through doing. The "Genetic Calculator" is kinda funky. It can never be anything more than a guide and that's pushing it.

I thought it would be better to learn before the doing?I don't mean to spoil the party and all, but genetics are learned through doing. The "Genetic Calculator" is kinda funky. It can never be anything more than a guide and that's pushing it.

I don't really want to "do" anything but learn the basics for now.

Can you say this a different way please?Genes have nothing do with the breed today, only what you know of your flock in most of the chicken stuff around here.
I too am learning the genetics end. The calculator is a basic tool to help, the rest comes through knowledge of your fowl.I’m not set on using the calculator, but as I’ve been trying to research for a breeding program I would like to start, I’ve been frustrated my my lack of understanding with how the variables all play together. I am wanting to breed Mille fleur cochins, but I can’t seem to figure out what birds I need to do various things with the coloring. I’m just trying to get an idea of what existing chickens ‘are’ and how their genetics play together. But to do that I need to know what does what!!

So with the APA who set the standards, if it looks the part, it is that breed. With hatchery stock it's a crap shoot of genes and no guarantee of what you have. You have to breed to know what you have.
