First hatch of the season and ever for me of this breed 25 set and all developed fully to lockdown. 22 hatched, two never pipped and one pipped and died. Hatch completely finished and chicks fluffy day 22.

Some of the chicks have some darker brown markings on their heads, is this indicative of anything?

22 out of 25 is pretty good. Congrats !! I just got my first eggs yesterday and am looking forward to my first hatch of this breed also. If they continue to pick up with the laying in the next week or two, I will not have to use lights. Sorry, but I don't know about the darker head spots......... stan

Thanks! They are my only breed (of 3) that are laying consistently and have been for most of the fall/winter so far. Love them!!

I saw no connection to anything. It did not amount to anymore than slight variation in chick down to me.

Doesn't mean that you could not mark yours and identify a connection. I never marked mine and they colored in so consistently that I assumed there was not a connection.

I raise Buff Orpingtons and it's been my experience that the ones with smudges on their head wind up with a richer, slightly darker feathering. Don't know if that translates to New Hampshire tho.

I got some pure Good Shepard from Jeremy and all the ones with darker spots on the head turned out to be pullets.Who Knows??

That would be cool to be able to sex them at hatch! I will mark them and see how it pans out. Thanks everyone for the input!

sgribble, what egg yield are you getting from the Good Shepard birds? Just curious I know their priority is meat.

I want Anconas for practical reasons. My girls like the New Hampshire's?

I have the German/GS NH cross birds....thus far they have been very good layers of large to ex large eggs...5/week on 10 month old pullets. they are such calm and easy going birds too.

Almost all of my pullets and hens lay 5 - 6 eggs per week. Great layers. They are from two different sources, both supposed to be the "German" variety I believe.
