getting hatching eggs from ebay

Don't forget there are lots of us here on BYC who sell hatching eggs....not as many of us right now because of the time of year but there are still some who have them to sell.

I received fourteen eggs at the beginning of this month and so far thirteen out of fourteen are developing nicely. there are so many variables however. Check feedback and just be aware that shipping eggs is a risk. . . Period. But it can be very rewarding. Ebay is just like any other egg seller/shipper. I've had good experiences for the most part and the one i did have problems with the seller was quick to reimburse me a fair amount (sent new eggs with a second purchase) and they did great! Whatever you decide to try good luck!

Depends on the seller and how they pack, I think. And how quickly they ship the eggs. I had some from TX and had a 50% hatch rate (actually 100% of one breed and 0% of another but I blame the bator conditions as there were dead chicks in the 0% batch).

My seller bubble wrapped the eggs and put them in a thick layer of newspaper and marked the box very clearly. Very professional job.

I agree with most people here, it all depends on a lot of things, I personaly have had the best luck with the people who wrap their eggs in the bubble wrap, the eggs seem to travel better, my best hatches have come from eggs that didn't get shipped as far, I am in Washington, and the eggs I have gotten from Oregon hatched out well, I also got some from Utah that hatched well, but the eggs I got from states farther away like Arkansas or virginia, didn't hatch well at all, but then again I got some from my neighbor that didn't hatch well either, I think it has more to do with your skills with the incubator! Be prepared to get some cheap eggs, spend way to much on shipping, and expect a poor hatch. Then when it goes well you will be happy, I know I had fun doing it, and if my wife lets me I will do it again in the spring, you sure end up with some cool varieties you may not have access to in your area. Bye the way this is my first post!

Always get the eggs individually wrapped in bubble wrap, then put the eggs in the center of the box with peanuts. Make sure the box is filled with peanuts tightly so as the eggs cannot move around. Never had a broken egg this way. We do this for our calls and geese.

Just remember no matter how well wrapped the eggs, even if they arrive unbroken, rough handling can ruin the hatch by "internal breakage", ruptured, floating aircells, or too hot/too cold. Just because they don't develop doesn't mean they weren't fertile.

Yep. And that's part of what I mean when I worry about the distance an egg has to travel. It's more of time spent in different temperatures and with rough handling. Yes, there are people who have received eggs from coast to coast and gotten good hatch rates. I, myself, have terrible problems receiving eggs from Ohio. There's something going on between me and Ohio where eggs arrive more than a week late and never develop. I've gotten eggs from further away with no problem. I've gotten eggs closer with no problem. I have no idea what's going on there.

I've gotten eggs packaged all sorts of ways. Individually bubble wrapped is just one way that works. Foam cartons with extra padding inside tend to work. Today I got eggs wrapped in newspaper and padded with shredded newspaper and they were unbroken. I've also gotten eggs packed in paper cartons with varying padding where almost all the eggs were broken. My problem with scented toilet tissue comes from such a packing job. The eggs arrived soaked in egg from about 5 that broke and smelling of perfume from the paper. Only one developed and it died in the shell. I don't know if the perfume poisoned them or if they were just that badly damaged inside, but I figure that perfumes can't be good.

I was seriously looking at an add on eBay when I read, "Carefully padded with toilet paper" and I hit back and went to look for another auction.

Except for the larger black hen, every one of those little ones was from a shipped eBay egg, too. And there are a few more that are hiding. The young black hen was getting harassed a bit by my older hens and decided to join them in the baby pen.
