getting hatching eggs from ebay

Quote:
I don't think it is absolutely necessary for the bubble wrap. That is just one method. I recently hatched 15 of 16 from shipped eggs. They were wrapped in paper towels and firmly placed in egg carton. The egg carton was placed in a well padded PO box, stuffed with newspaper shredded as well as wadded up, with no room for movement. I think it is just differing opinions. I have also had successful hatches with eggs wrapped individually in bubblewrap. Really, there is no, "right way!" I think it may be best to ask the purchaser what he/she prefers.

I agree about the bubble wrap, it's all in how they are packed. If they cannot move, and do not touch anything hard (like other eggs or the sides of the box), they should be okay, provided that the box is well padded. But I've had eggs sent here from across the country that did well, and some sent from across the state that didn't, so handling is a big part of it. But I can't hatch shipped chicken eggs worth a darn regardless of where they came from

The best shipped egg hatch rate I've ever gotten is from a lady in southern Georgia. Eggs typically take a day to arrive. She usually sends about 9 for 6+ and I have at least 7 that go into lock down. She packs by individually wrapping in bubble wrap, placing the eggs with wadding into a small box, which she then surrounds with wadding and places in the center of a larger shipping box. I believe she had a ridiculous rooster to hen ratio also, so the eggs are always fertile.

Different variety is the reason why I try with other people's shipped eggs. Otherwise, I'd just duplicate her flock.

Just from my personal experience this year in dealing with hatching eggs, I have dealt with reputable Ebay egg sellers and you really need to understand that more times than not, you will be lucky to get even half of them to hatch into healthy chicks. It can get very expensive per chick, especially if you only get a couple to hatch. But it is very fun to hatch them on your own and its rewarding as well. Just be sure and read the feedback comments on that buyer before making a purchase. Some leave follow up comments as to how many they hatched and you can get a good idea.

Hey, that's a good idea! There was one box of eggs I got, where they sent 43 eggs for a batch of 36. 1 egg was clearly rotten on arrival. Several others started weeping within a few days and had to be discarded. By day 14 when I started weeding out infertile eggs, I kept only 11. Those 11 went into the hatcher. I have one chick from them. The rest exploded.

When I sent feedback, I said that they shipped very well.

I purchased two different times on ebay from the same seller. They came very well packed, no cracks or breaks. They came 1300 miles. First time I had 25% success - second time 15.4% success. I think in the future I will buy chicks already hatched.

I've mailed breakables (not eggs, but figurines) and I found that ziplocks are awesome.

Blow them up and seal them well, kinda like what big companies are doing, but smaller scale.

Of course, paranoid that I am I also had them bubblewrapped and papered, but I think it helped. *shrug*

Anyone have an ebayers that they would recommend? Good packing and proven fertile, even if not perfect hatch?

Even checking feedback, well that usually just talks about packing, which is helpful no doubt, but a dishonest seller could have all hens, not a roo in sight and sell those eggs as fertile... then just say 'no guarantee on hatch rate' and they're covered.

So, I'd be interested to know if there are any you KNOW really send fertile ones.

edit... by ebay name since they aren't always a perfect translation between here and there.

Proceed with caution! I have purchased items on ebay for years, with no problem. The item description is your contract. Ebay used to stand behind this, but no longer. After hurricane katrina, water meter covers, street signs (stop signs, etc..) disappeared from New Orleans at an alarming rate. Then appeared on ebay. Even with many of us writing, and offering proof to ebay, they took no action. Looking for stolen merchandise, used to be the pawn shop, now look to ebay.

I just had an experience buying eggs on ebay from someone that sent eggs from unprovern pullets, even though the ad stated 'several hatches'. She admitted the lie, after the fact. She offered to
refund my money, after I returned the eggs, at my expense!

All I asked is that she be honest in her ads. She changed it, I left feedback, then she changed it back to its original lie.

If you are looking for black sex link eggs, PM before you buy, don't make my mistake!
