Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Sounds like a lot is coming together at once. Good on you and I hope dom works out as well as Bernie has with the animals. That will definitely be key in maintaining YOUR sanity while stateside!

I'm in Southeast Alabama and joining your thread. Have had my flock of 23 hens for 1 year now. Just picked up 12 new chicks a couple weeks ago. I have RIR, Buff O's, 2 Sexlinks, 1 White Leghorn, and 2 Blue Copper Marans. The newbies are Black Copper Marans, Blue Copper Marans, and Blue Ameraucanas. (hope at least half will be pullets!) Enjoying the reading so far-- it was highly recommended to me. Blessings!

Welcome aboard. Lots of new people lately. It's great to see.

Two turkeys have pipped.

It's two days ahead of hatch day. Local eggs are also hatching.

So many chicks!

Mrs Oz took a run to Kabankalan today for G.I. sheet for the piggery gable. She also picked up a salt block for Motza and the goats, 100kg of urea and 50kg of 15 15 15 fertilizer. The urea will be added to saw dust and rice husks to accelerate composting as our chicken poo output outs less than demand. It's great to know that we are finally greener and composting any plant material not edible. The balanced fertilizer is for the trees.

Two rooster s were butchered and roasted stuffed with tamarind leaves for dinner.

Turkey eggs are pipping. They are ahead of schedule. I am beyond excited about the pavo. It's one breed of fowl I really want. The other is peacock. I think I will give them a try this season.

We are waiting on the Pekins and Rouen from another batch.

Welcome to the feathered friends! God bless!

The boys got their first compressor and nail gun experience today. Six hours of nailing was reduced to one.

The forty eight foot piggery is being built in two halves - the oldest gilts are just about too big for their current pen. Today all but the roof thatch was completed on the lumber component of half the first section. The hollow blocks and concrete component will start again after the sand delivery on Sunday.

Busy times continue on CocoBeach

If a hen has been fertilised, after it lays the fertile eggs will it go broody and sit on the eggs or will I have to get a broody hen?
