Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Ok, I'm coming out of lurkdom now that I've read THE WHOLE THING!!

What fun!!!!! Oz, you are an Inspiration!
I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't want to interrupt my reading to post. It only took me 3 days to get through it, but I have more time than usual to read these days as I'm still recovering from an accident and haven't gone back to work yet.
So.....before I get yelled at for just poking my head in and disappearing again, I'll go ahead and introduce myself. My name is Katja and I live in central Alabama. I am a professional Dressage trainer and a Chickenaholic. I have a little 3 acre mini farm, on which I live with my 5 equines (3 horses, 2 donkeys) 3 barn kitties, a doggie and, of course, CHOOKS!! I adore my chickens. I got them as day-old chicks and started with 4 Red Stars and 4 Australorps. Then I added my little Bowie to the mix. He's my little Polish roo, of whom I am insanely proud because he made Chicken of the Week with his picture here last week! All of my friends are insanely jealous that I have a Famous Chicken.

. Seriously, these little critters are addicting, but I am not telling any of you here anything you don't already know. I have eggs in the 'bator right now, as we speak, trying to hatch out the first batch of Bowie kids. I am almost finished building a second, smaller coop to use as a grow-out pen for the teenagers once they outgrow the brooder.

So, that's my little world in a nutshell (or should I say eggshell?)

Cheers,
Katja
Hey Hi Katja, I used to be a dressage rider back in the day. My dressage trainer actually taught me to long line and eventually to drive. I am retired from riding now but My goal when I got my Percheron was to do driven dressage and eventually Combined Driving... Couldnt afford it. Sigh.

Anyhoo Welcome..... VBG.

from Shelby county, AL.. *sings "It's a small world"*

Deb, I will be driving my donkey mama when she weans her foal, and eventually I'll drive them both as a pair. I have several friends that are seriously into driving and compete in CDE's, etc. Cool sport!

Its freaking amazing to watch on YouTube..... I have never been to an event nor have there been any held here.... Sigh.

deb "who needs a donkey.... LOL ... one day"

That'd better be a fancy donkey for $9K!

Here are my two little sweeties. I got the mama to be a companion for my weanling filly last fall, as my filly wasn't ready to be turned out with my two big geldings yet. I named my donkey Mary Poppins.(I call her Ms. P.) Turns out she was pregnant. (she was a rescue.) June 2 at 6:30 am, little Dochie arrived. (Dochie is short for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, in case you are wondering.)

**** cute ee-awes

There are probably only a few donkeys in the hole country.

Any imported animal is pricey. A nubian OR la mancha goat is $1000. I am sending Bernie off with $60 to buy 2 local goats and bring me change.

The set up for AI to get 50 straws of goat semen and a liquid nitrogen container is about $1000 without shipping and customs and ag dept fees. That would give you about 25 F1 crosses with a 50% loss.

An F1 there is $160 F2 $220 F3 $360
