Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Indeed.

Originally I wanted to free range the pigs but I dont have the land to give up to a huge pen so I am going with just a 3 sow at a time farrowing set-up and a total of 9 sows and 1 boar. The first two sets of piglets from each sow will be sold as weaners. Although there is good money in raising pigs to market, the cost of setting up housing for up to 90 growing pigs at a time is a too prohibative at the moment.

I am in search of a Duroc Boar

They are a fast growing breed.

My sows will be Landrace or Great Whites or crosses with Duroc

Large Whites ears point up while Landrace ears are floppy

And you guys thought all you would learn about is chickens

i talked to a guy who had let his pigs free range
he said the meat was a little on the tough side
so instead he changed to a movable pigpen

Ah, raising pigs. My husband just brought up the thought last week. I can separate my emotions from the chickens, but I am a bit concerned that I would become attached to a pig. Now, don't get me wrong, I will NEVER turn down bacon... but I might start comparing them to my dog

Hey Oz I know pigs can be AI'd you could get any boar you wanted without having to keep one on premisis....

Have you considered Old Spots? They are great foragers and good mommas not aggressivie when you handle their pigletts. They are also a heritage breed here. Probably not availalbe in PI. But a breed I was considering for a while.

deb
AI is done routinely in the Philippines.

The guy that does it charges 1 piglet - pick of the litter - and always female.

The sale price of a piglet is Php2,300. The cost to feed a boar for a year is not much more.

If I have 9 pigs and 2 farrowings per year..................

I am better off raising a new boar every 2 years

I do wish I could find someone to AI goats. Its a shame to invest in a buck when I wont be able to maximise his value. Its not worth it to bring goat semen from the US though.

How much do those pigs eat?? and what will you feed them?
It takes 200kg of feed to get a pig from wean to market - 90kg in four months

A sow consumes 4-5 lbs a day while gestating and up to 8lbs a day while lactating.

as to what to feed them - OZ's special formulas
