I might give it a shot next year. I'm really just going to focus on Aquaponics and possible migratory waterfowl. I don't want to spread myself too thin with projects

In that case, get the bedding/poo stuff, and make a really big pile where you want your garden next year (or this fall). Turn it over now and then, and it will break down into a nice garden bed for you.

It is easier to make a lasagnia garden and let it rot into a nice loamy soil.

Would it smell tremendously while breaking down?

Not usually, but you have to stir it/turn it now and then, and it might smell for a few hours.

That's good! You might start collecting mushroom compost, peat moss, etc when you find them on sale. If you could find a large cow water tank with wholes in the bottem, it would make a really prize raised bed for your garden.

They occasionally have all of those on sale on craigslist. I might bulk up on those items for the right price
