GMO discussion with teacher

All that is said is probably true but not certain concerning GMO but I for one have not seen any hard evidence to support the claims and what do we replace them with? Do you let produce costs skyrocket beyond the worlds' ability to buy it? Farmers are being paid to not farm their ground in the U.S. so what does that tell you about available ground? We put cities on farm ground. Africa has a lot of potential but people would rather make them keep all their land for the wildlife so we keep them poor and reliant on outside help. The same is said for S.A. and Central America. If we were not forced by the Greenies to an ever shrinking landbase to actually farm we would not need these supercrops.

Yes, I know what all the GMO corn and soy are in...which is why I avoid processed food as much as possible.

This use of pervasive use of corn and soy products is why the GMO industry doesn't want it labeled....

If you read up, you find that the GMO plants are increasing the amount of Round-up needed because of new "super-weeds". Farmers are less likely to rotate crops, so soils are becoming depleted, and other pests are lingering. Monsanto's GMO corn is producing resistant root borers with the Bt corn.

Round-Up should be used when the plant is young, it has a less developed immune system and is likely to be killed by the chemical. Instead of spraying twice, once to catch the early weeds, then to catch the weeds that grow after that, some farmers have started spraying only once when the weeds are a bit older. When the plant is more mature, it has a greater chance of surviving the chemical and developing a resistance to it.

I don't mean to say that Monsanto is always right in what their doing, but they do catch a lot of flack for things that aren't entirely their fault.

There are also health concerns with GMO foods. At minimum, they should be labelled, so that people can make a choice.

Theres way too much to label though. Pretty much everything in an American supermarket that isn't organic contains GMO products, be it corn, soybeans, canola... That sorta thing.

But we are, farmland is shrinking and with the growing population, theres not much we can do about that besides figuring out a way to produce more food, on less land. The answer to that is GMO and other new varieties (not all modern day crops are GMO).

Heres a general rule then, anything with corn or soybeans is likely GMO.

Are you going to label Coke as GMO Coke? Or toothpaste as GMO toothpaste? Thats ridiculous.

Instead of labeling it corn syrup, it should be labeled GMO corn syrup. If the labeling had been done initially, it wouldn't be in everything, because they would not have been able to sell it.

Too much to label is precisely the same argument that comes up anytime any labeling is proposed. Labeling food, preposterous, it will cost too much. Label trans-fats, no way, it's everywhere. It is a completely fallacious argument to say that it is "too much to label". It is adding three simple letters to the labeling that already exists.

The companies also offer incentives for using the GMO seed products. It is not as if all the seeds are marketed the same way.
