Gnats killing birds

Pics
Glad you are getting it done. The gnats are much fewer here. Lots of wind keeping them dispersed? Fly strips still collecting them also. No more deaths. Birds are all lively and eating. They will pick at the greens, but scarf the mealworms up. Doesn't appear much of the greens are being eaten.

Everyone's eyes are looking better. Not swollen now.

Thats great news! Im so glad to hear it! Did you do anything else to treat for them?

Got the permethrin, but have not sprayed. I'd be dousing the quail. Do need to mow the yard though. Nothing else done. The worst passed when I was shown this thread. Do you still have gnats or are you being proactive (looking for vengeance)? The sticky fly strips were the extent.

I just thought about putting rosemary in the coops. Let me cut some. See if that does anything beyond annoy the quail.

Yes i am still very much looking for vengeance but I'm outa spray and the stores are out of it too. Im thinkn about going back to vanilla until the stores restock. I think theyd pick at the rosemary lol good luck tho im glad it had started to dissipate before you had to go to work. When you spray after ur next grass cut i bet u wont have anymore issues this year. Fighting them here while theyre full force is pretty rough but im glad i can, even if it has left one lil quail hen all alone. Im thinkn about goin to get her a friend from the local feed store.

Yikes!!
Have heard of buffalo gnats killing chickens here before....
....not so much in the last year or two tho.
We have them up here too...worst story I remember was in Indiana, they lost a bunch of birds.

I found that story when i was posting this orig, so sad :hiti really think it happened so quickly becuz they were such little birds:hit

This sounds terrible! How do the gnats actually kill livestock? Do they pass some virus or parasite when they bite?

Its a double whammy they suck blood as well as once their weak they can suffocate an animal. In my case according to the vet the bites lead to a hypersensitivity because of the anticoagulant in their venom. Also in my case the bugs were in every bit of my poor birds body, her crop to her feces, on her skin still in necropsy and in her esophagus. The bites cause significant swelling. Truely terrible please dont make my mistake of these suckers show up as your door.

Well i did it. I went to the local feed store and got the last quail hen a buddy. Couldnt help myself, i came home with 7 quail  the conditions were horrible and thats why i dont really go to him altho id like to support him he doesnt take care of his critters to my standards. I asked for an adult pharaoh hen and she took me to a bunch of cages of texas A&M. They were half bald and bare backed. She forgot there was a cage w 2 pharaoh hens and one silver coturnix. I scooped em up about as fast as i could and put them in the diaper box waiting in my car. Then inside i found about 30 button quail in a 15 gal aquarium. So i have 4 of those theyll be strictly inside pets the gnats wont ever touch them. In case the 3 cots are carriers ive got them and the last gal all in my front yard so theyre far enough from my flock. The buttons are nesstled safely in my dining room i even got to hear one singing already :love
