Goat Lovers of Arizona

Hi, How have you been? We have had 11 kids born here and all but one we want to sell is sold. Dazzle is going to kid any time now!

Hi everyone! I just adopted a couple goats. One is a male and is either two or five months old and the other is a female and she is only five weeks old. I rescued them basically. They came from a really dirty cramped wet place and were infested with lice. Yuk. The poor little girl could barely stand and was layin down very strangely when the others were up walking. She is doing much better and the lice are just about gone. Now my problem is the male is trying to mount the female and she is waaaaaaay to young for that. I know he is going to hurt her. I need to castrate him, but my boyfriend is to squeamish to help me. After reading up on it I'm understanding the only ways to do it now, because of his age(and the size of those things!!), We have to cut or crush them. Is this correct? Can anyone direct me to a place or person who can help or do it for me?

You can also band him. Cutting would be the most immediate, though. I'd suggest contacting a livestock veterinarian for help.

Until then, I'd keep them separate. She is too young for her first heat even, but the constant abuse could stress her out. She doesn't need that. If they can see eachother, maybe touch noses through a fence, they should be OK.

I am one who doesn't often recommend treating prophylactically (I usually suggest treating only if there is an actual disease), but I'd really suggest running a treatment course against worms and coccidia. If they came from filthy conditions, I'd venture to guess they are infested, since pathogens thrive in dirty, overcrowded conditions. Something like corid or dimethox (best) will knock out the coccidia, a treatment dose (not preventative) for a full five days, repeat with a preventative dose 21 days later until they're both over six months old (when they can better manage coccidia, it is a killer of kids, but most adults can handle it). A wormer like valbazen or ivermectin plus would be best for worming. Repeat the wormings with the same wormer ten days after initial treatment, then ten days again after that one, then one last time 30 days after that. It will knock out worms at all stages of their lifecycles.

Make sure, before dosing anything, to weigh the kids. If they're small enough, you can weigh yourself, then stand on a scale with a goat, and subtract your weight from the total. An accurate weight will ensure a proper dose. Underdose, and things become resistant. Overdose, well, overdosing is not recommended.

Thank you! What a wonderful help you have been. I went to get just one for my horse as her herd mate had to be put down :'( and she was lonely. When I saw the place I couldn't leave without two. She was so pitiful. Now these drugs you mentioned, can I get all these at my feed store?
