Thank you so much!! See the blue one? Guessing you can tell which are Gold Lace Blue & Gold Lace Black at hatch? Wonder if it will get harder to tell blue from black as they grow? I was thinking the cinnamon ones are quite dark too, but I'm looking at them with an amateur eye...so much to learn. Our stock is from Marc. Now the question is whether to cross with our blacks or get some unrelated GLO's? If we cross with black do you know what we'll get... 50/50 black & GL or black with GL gene?
I had a feeling yours came from Marc. Goodness, it's gotten to the point where I can look at chicks and tell their parent's bloodline. I need a life away from these babies

I don't know what will happen after their first molt, but you will be able to tell the blues from the blacks. It will increasingly become more obvious, especially in a side to side comparison. Yes, you can tell at hatch. Look closely at the underfluff. Also, most of the time the GL Black will have darker legs at hatch. It changes quickly though.
Honestly, I would only cross to black if you are trying to correct the background color. Crossing to black will set you back 3 generations without lacing. Crossing father to daughter/granddaughter/great grand daughter will give you a new strain without losing the lacing along the way and with the ability to pick and choose which female has the best lacing and breed her to her father. I personally would choose line breeding over outcrossing, but there are other schools of thought.
What I have noticed is that the Marc chicks don't reliably lace from first feathering. What does that mean? I don't know, really. I have two Greenfire juvenile pullets (the moms to some of my chicks) that did not either and they eventually laced. Perhaps Marc's bloodline just takes a bit longer to lace. I have heard from one other person that has Marc chicks that is noticing the same thing. Late bloomers? I bring this up so that you don't cull too soon with the Marc chicks.
