Gold Laced Orpington- For Learning and Sharing

Pics

Ok, my turn for a pic.....I finally saved enough $ to get a mate for Sweetpea. I want to send out a very big THANKYOU to Jobelle for helping me make my gold laced dreams come true! This is Champ....he's one of Big Hoss's babies.....can't wait till Champ and Sweetpea have babies of their own!

OMG! They are gorgeous together! They are going to have some fantastic babies!

Is it just me......or are they making eyes at each other....LOL?????? I think they're in love!

You are very welcome indeed! So happy that they are a good match!

Lol.....I thought so too....I love this pic of them together....Sweetpea lives up to her name for sure, and Champ has such a good personality! He's a card. Everything he does is so animated it cracks me up! He's not too sure about being picked up yet, but he tolerates it. He tries to hide a little, but once I pick him up he will sit right there until I put him down.

Thankyou, everybody for your kind comments...I am blessed!
Thankyou Delisha for sharing pics of your big babies.....very cute....could the feather eating be because of lack of calcium?

Can i ask why you think feather eating is related to calcium shortage?
I have never heard of it and I am quite interested.
I free feed calcium and grit in all of my coops..but I still would like more information about feather eating and calcium shortage.

I honestly think its boredom..she is a flighty Orpington..quite an odd personality for an Orpington. She reminds me of my Ameracuana's.

Itsjust something one of the old timers told me once that if a chicken is picking out feathers and eating them that there is not enough calcium in their diet. I have no idea if there is any truth to it or not.....actually iwas hoping you coucould tell me.:idunno....I do notice that feeding all organic fermented that I still need to supplement with oyster shells just to make sure.....I have one hen that her egg shells are just slightly sandpapery......I've been adding black oil sunflowers to the FF...what do you think? The other hens eggs are perfect. Is there something that I'm missing?

I had a blue chick that was a little odd too last spring....anytime he would get excited he would spin in little circles as fast as he could....he seems to have outgrown it....I guess there's one in every family..lol....

Feather picking is usually protein, bordome, or no room. Not much calcium in feathers. I have been doing more activity things in the barn too. Hanging cabbage and things like that. They miss going outside. They do not like the snow and cold rain so they have been staying in.
I feed organic chick in the winter with grit and oyster. I also feed back all shells so they have it available.

Chickengirl, what beautiful hens. Are they the chicks that you hatched from papabrooder?

Sweetpea laid her first egg today! :weee...now to set it after NYD hatch-a-long and see if Champ has figured out the business end yet....He follows her around like a little lost puppy, but I haven't seen him breed her yet. Maybe he's just a gentleman about it and catches her when nobody is looking.
