Golden Comets

That is a golden comet hen--behind the SS--that I got last spring. Notice the white feathers. She is laying very well.

I got comets from tsc a few years ago - all the pullets were darker with the chipmunk stripes. The two that I got that were yellow and feathered out white ended up roos. All the bin said was pullets for the darker ones. The two yellows came from the straight run bin. It's possible they are another breed - only time will tell at this point.

We ordered Golden Comets from Cackle Hatchery this spring. They look exactly like the light colored ones in post #9, not the darker ones. Great layers but slow down after the second year.

ETA - And very docile, easy to work with...thus our favorites.

Went back to TSC today... Found out that we bought Cornish Rock chicks...
Everything i read talks about them being great broilers, im wondering if they are good layers...
TSC appologized for the mix up, offered no refund!

Well I think you should insist on free chicks! Thats a pretty big mess up. If they are broilers you kill after 8 weeks. They grow super fast and eat a LOT. They are regular chicken size by 8 weeks. We raised some last year. Never again. Mine stunk and I hated them so much I was glad to cut their heads off..but then I had to skin the stinky things. NO thanks. I"ll buy organice whole fryers at the store! I went to our TSC today with my sister and they were sold out of everything. Only had 10 white rock chicks and two bunnies.

I hope you didn't throw out your chicks! All but one of them are females. Males look like a traditional yellow-white easter chick, while the females are caramel colored with stripes.

Their primary feathers WILL grow in white. Some of them might have rust specs or streaks, but the primaries are WHITE. The only one that looks suspicious is the little light colored one in the front.

They don't darken until week 3, so please at least wait that long. I ended up with a roo in my batch of Comets, and he feathered really really really slowly, and really started his comb early. He was very pale yellow from day one, not at all caramel like his sisters.

Congrats on all your girls!

thanks for all the replies... guess we are going to be eating good in about 7 weeks...
bought 10 more today, pullets for sure... 29 all together.
IM HOOKED....... LOL
