Gardener, greetings from the Umpqua - almost neighbors LOL. I gather you already have your chicks, but for future reference you might want to look at
http://www.roosterscoop.com/cockadoodledoo.html - they are near Medford, and say that a small order is not a problem. I hope they still think so next February LOL. I will be going down to pick them up, not having them go through the mail.
SeaChick, I'm beginning to see, by reading posts here on BYC, that chickens have their own personalities, and don't necessarily conform to what the breed description says. Thanks for the info about your hens.
Rooster-Red, I wasn't planning on getting a rooster. My space is truly very small - although we live on a large-ish piece of property, the way it is laid out gives me limited room for a coop. But just yesterday my neighbor commented that she was happy I was planning on chickens, that she missed having them, especially the rooster! I knew already that I wouldn't get any grief from the neighbors, I was just thinking about numbers, but now I'm not so sure. So, no, I am not planning for a rooster, but who knows how I'll feel in a few months.
OHChick, do you have pictures of your NH reds? I have pretty much settled on Araucaunas/EE's, and Silver Spangled Hamburgs (they are so pretty), and I guess I've read too many children's stories because I would really like the last 2 to be little red or brown hens LOL. And brown eggs would be nice, because the Hamburgs lay white ones. So I think it is a toss up between NH Reds and the Buff Orpingtons.
