Infections really only happen when its pierced with improper unsterile equipment, when you don't clean it, and when you keep playing with it while its healing. If you don't do any of that then your pretty safe, unless you end up being allergic.

my tongue stud occasionally gets swollen and hurts, but if I take out the barbell and poke it back through my tongue the other direction, i usually come up with a flake of popcorn shell. OW! I think that things might get stuck in a piercing though, and if you weren't really careful, you could get a bad infection.

I have done mine myself 3 times.I do not recommend it.I now know what a retarded teenager I was to do it the way I did in the first place, and lucky to have a nose bc if it had become infected...holy smokes I hate to think about it.

Lips are a lot harder then noses to heal in my experiance, mainly due to the amount of foriegn matter going into the mouth and the fact the piercing is going to get moved and disturbed more then if ity were at the nostril. Everyone experiances things differently, I cant stand ear cartilidge being pierces but nostil is no problem at all. Lip was much more painful and a bit more care involved, as well as a lot less forgiving then nostril piercings are these days as far as the publics view. BAsicly though if its done right all you need to do is keep it clean without over irriatating it.

Lips do take forever to heal. I had to take mine out last summer after 8yrs of having it bc it finally got infected by something and I couldnt get it to heal.It sucked.

Also with lips the inside heals a lot faster then the outside, so its very tough taking the jewelry out and leaving it for any amount of time without having to restretch it or even halfway repierce it because of that.
