Good or Bad?

With the temperature climbing I am getting concerned about my chicks. I do not know if its a good idea or not but I have been freezing bottles of water, removing the bottle and putting them in their water containers. I am also putting the Save A Chick in 2 small 1 gallon water containers with the ice bottles. I am changing their water at least once a day and fortunately for me they are located in a wooded area so direct sun is not a problem.

I think that is overkill. Let them be chickens not babies.

I think it is a wonderful idea!! My GSD's and chickens get ice water when it is hot. They love it!

It might be overkill but with the temperatures going over 100 and having baby chicks ranging from 3 wks to 8 wks I do not want to take any chances. This is the first time I have gone to this extreme. Its for the babies.

I don't think it's overkill at all. Heat stress can kill them so what you are doing sounds like a great idea. You are protecting them, it's great to hear

I personally think you are doing the right thing. That's what I do too! I change their water twice a day and add ice cubes when I do. I try to keep them 'cool' water at all times until this 'extreme heatwave' is finally over. Just keep doing what your're doing!

Mat2dong, If you're going through this heatwave as well I hope your chickens all stay healthy. So many people are talking about finding their chickens dead when going into the coop in the morning. It seems the trouble is during the night when coops are closed up to prevent predators from entering.

Maybe put holes in the coop? I'm just going off what she said. It's in a cool place. If you put holes in the coop that should do it.

I don't know either but I think I do remember reading it or something similar.

My flock live in the barn so they get plenty of ventilation. Plus, it has a very high roof so that cuts down on heat. It has windows and three sets of double doors. I keep them all fully open during the day and lately during the night I leave a couple doors open due to the heat. The windows are never shut in the summer unless it's storming. We are lucky to not worry about predators. Hawks being the main concern. About all my neighbors raise chickens and they all roam free. Over the past 10 years only one neighbor has had a chicken killed and it was from another neighbors beagle hound pup. Since this happened he makes sure his dogs stay tightly locked up!

Our coop has 2 windows & the small chicken entrance door which stay open. We close the windows when the temps drop in the late Fall to early Spring. We also have an electric fence around the bottom of the run to keep predators at bay. And they always have shaded spots out in the run at all day.
