I blame Newt for a lot of the problem. Before he polarized the parties so much, the members of the different parties could socialize together, actually be friends. The might have philosophical differences but they knew each other as people and could often work these things out. Now it is so polarized that they can't give any philosophical ground and work out a solution.
Not that it always was a bed of roses. Politics has always been a rough and tumble business. And things have been pretty polarized in the past. I'll offer Andrew Jackson as an example. But the art of politics has been compromise. Get enough of what you want so that you can come up with a workable solution. Now it is all or nothing. There is no art in that, no working the craft of politics to reach a workable solution. That is just stubbornness.
