Yes. You can tell Embdens apart for the first couple weeks. The girls are much darker than the boys. But, they eventually both fade to all yellow so if it matters get some leg bands on them now.

I am glad to see you have one out and a second working on it, congrats. I just knew they had to make some progress through the night, as my two pheasants that had pipped yesterday hatched overnight... must be a great day to be hatched.

I am thrilled as it is my first attempt at hatching since last fall. I look forward to seeing more pictures when I get home from work... I really, really don't want to go but someone has to do it.

Embdems are yellow when born if they have dark brown heads its usually a female. at least that is what mine were. we got them last year they were cute little yellow and brown fuzzy buts. now they are mean big white devils. at least the three males are. they are beautiful but for the life of me I don't know why DH wanted them. the eggs are hugh but dhes one only one who eats them and they are fertile the first year so you have to wait until they are two to be able to use the eggs. The males are so nasty at mating time i have to go inside there pen with a garden rake to protect myself. They have attacked me and knocked me to the ground before. They hiss and try to get me through the fence as well. i hope ;you have better luck with yours than I did.

This time of year is breeding season, so all the males are going to be 'protecting' their territory and women folk. I don't find Embdens to be any more or less 'mean', since my Pilgrims and Roman Tufted are also argumentative right now.

I find the females have the dark feathers on their back, where as both males and females may have the dark/gray feathers on the head. You're mostly looking along the back.

[edit] I should be getting pips tomorrow on my 3rd hatch. The waterfowl are really keeping up with the laying, so I'm going to keep hatching ducks as long as I have eggs. I think I have enough geese set now, though. As long as the hatches work out.

congrats to you Miss P!! I use the term born myself with the eggs.
So good to learn something new each day...sexing the geese.
Can't wait for more pics.
Since they will imprint on you surely they won't be mean to you?

I have always been around mean hissing geese. I was even chased by a few of them. LOL

I am hoping these babies will imprint on me and be nice and not so mean. LOL

I am going to put a band on her leg so I can keep track of her.

My goslings imprinted one me from day one. but we chose to let them be geese and when they were old enough put them outside. I had to take care of two of the males when they were teenagers as one cut his foot and the other was attacked so I was picking them up and doctoring them for some time. Had no problem then but once they were around 9 months old it started. The largest male decided that he was boss. after many battles and trying different things to tame him I finally told DH they are your geese you clean them. now that doesnt mean I don't have to feed them when hes at work but he cleans the goose houses every day as its difficult for me to hold the rake and the hose at the same time. It has nothing to do with the mating season I expected them to get nuts then, this started months ago during the winter. We just have mean male geese. The girls arent so bad,if I wasnt so attached I would let DH put them on the table but I just cant bring myself to do the deed after all I went through with them when they were little.
