I cannot remember why I wanted geese added to my flock, but I was smitten when my first pair of Toulouse goslings arrived as two day olds shipped from the hatchery a little over two years ago. I named them Kate and and William.
One died at a couple of weeks old, too late in the season to have a replacement shipped. I thought it was William. I found a male gosling on Craig's List a few weeks older than Kate. The new gander, Angus, bonded with her and the pair of them were adorable together.
As time passed, Kate became duck-centric (I have Cayuga ducks as well as chickens) and Angus became more interested in hanging out with the chickens.
I waited for eggs. At two years of age, after "Kate" and Angus started to fight over girl ducks I realized they were both ganders. Re-named Kate as Caleb. He was a very good gander daddy to ducklings, guarding mama ducks and their babies as they trundled about the property or swam in the stock tank.
Ordered 3 sexed female goslings this past Spring, again at the very end of the gosling season. When Zoe, Dora and Ariel were large enough, they joined the general population and Caleb took over their Goose Education. He has since started to flirt with Zoe.
I absolutely love my geese. Don't tell my chickens, ducks and turkeys, but I like the geese more.
They are such characters. I talk to them all the time, responding to their "Buh Buh bup" gabbles when they are milling around me. There is nothing like a quartet of big geese honking and flapping their wings as they run to greet me (each and every time they see me anew throughout the day).
They are VERY smart.
Their newest game is to stand around a galvanized trash can and bill the metal handles, making them clang against the container. What fun!
