Thank you!! Change of plans today... we are no longer going camping because we are picking up my new mare this afternoon instead!!

Back to goose news... I talked to head state vet today about the delay in getting npip #. He apologized, said he was out of town for the past few weeks, had received my testing from the other state vet, but did not have the completed npip form from me (which other vet did not mention before), so he emailed it over this morning. I immediately completed and returned it. The head vet apologized over and over for the disorganization of their office and promised to expedite getting npip#. He said I should have it in a few days. I will definitely be calling him later this week to follow up, rather than wait patiently for something to show up in my mailbox.

In other goose news... Spirit is not doing well with the slick footing that early morning frost creates. So, before we go pick up mare, we are moving special needs pen back into our backyard, connecting their pen to our big shed, so we can begin locking them up at night. We will also enlarge front/side area into one yard and merge our adult dewlaps with our juveniles. Assuming they integrate smoothly, we can start locking them up again at night in their garage pen. Hopefully this will be a permanent set-up for our guys while they we go through the worst of winter.

Thanks, Lydia! We got Spirit's new pen almost finished today... just need to run the electric line along outside for added protection in the morning, then we will move the group over. But, in more exciting news.... we brought our new mare home tonight!! She is beautiful and HUGE!! I will probably have to get a bigger horse trailer by next summer as I expect she will get too big to fit in my current one! Just like the dewlaps, she is a gentle giant. I love her!! This is truly the best present my husband has gotten me in the 13+ years we have been together.

So sweet, I know your excited. when is her foal do? It's funny right, My best presents from my dh are always things like a new building he has built for me, or Missy my goose, very sweet things.I have never been a flowers and candy type of girl. Enjoy!! Not that theres anything wrong with flowers and candy I like them both.

Thats a heck of a Bday present. Welcome mare ownership ( I find this so funny since you just mentioned how you dont prefer mares). How did the others take to her when she arrived?

Lydia, I agree. My best presents are usually things like horse tack or tools. Flowers and candy are nice, but not my cup of tea. Her foal is due in March.

Celtic, I know!! I can't believe I got a mare either. But, I will adjust. lol My wonderful neighbor across the street let us put her in one of his barn stalls for the night, because it was late when we got her home last night. So, she will meet her new herd this morning. Hope there are no injuries in the process.

Is she bigger than the others? Females are usually the boss right? you'll have to have a talk with the boys and tell them about her delicate condition.

Janet, she is so beautiful, and you deserve a great gift after all you have given to the geese and to the goose community! In our experience, the pregnant mares don't take any guff off of anybody. My brother says the best way to teach a stallion some humility is to put him in the same pasture as a pregnant mare!! They rule! Looks like you will need a mounting block to get up on this one.

Happy Early Birthday to you and congrads on the new preganat mare!!!!!

By the way, YES a mare will put a stallion in it's place. I know from experience with our mini mare. Buck would get the idea to mount her while pregnant and she would kick the crap out of him. He was the sire of her foal and she kept him in his place......

Another warning be careful with the mare after she foals.... Lady our mare was fine with us just a couple hours after she foaled.
But when we left, I was going to get the camera to take pictures and when I walked back in to take the photo's she came over and turned and kicked the crap out of me. She did this the whole time after the foal was born. You really had to watch her. Just a warning not all mares are like what lady was.
But they are very protective of the foals.
