Goose - What is this, how did it happen, what do I do about it?

I think the liquid would be better, but I don't have any, so I just use mine, which is 500mg calcium and 1000 I.U. D. I don't have any proof that it works, just a few hens and turkeys that were in distress, got the pills and lube, and within 24 hours, passed their eggs. The smallest ones I have done this to are Old English that weigh 500 grams, the turkeys weigh about 14kg.
So how then do you give it too them? I have liquid calcium/mag in strawberry flavor and i mix it in with yogurt for my chickens never tried to give it to my ducks or geese.

The same way I give cats and dogs pills, open mouth, place at back of tongue. Some will swallow, some don't, so I push it down not their esophagus, then massage it into their crop.

I hope I never have to do this because of getting it int their lungs, but I'd say if there was 2 working on this it would be much better chance of getting it where it's suppose to go. Especially if working with waterfowl since they are so big well Turkeys get pretty big too.

I wouldn't cut back too much on her feed, unless you are a lot warmer than it is here in MI. Single digits here. Keeping her out of the light should work. If that doesn't work go to your vet and tell him you have a goose that needs badly not to lay eggs for a while, he should have something that will stop her, but it might mess her up for laying the rest of the year. If she does have a prolapse, use Preparation H, or in a pinch, sugar water to take down the swelling, and if it doesn't goo back by itself, gently push it back in. Skunks are famous for prolapsing, so I have dealt with that, but not in a fowl.

Just be very gentle and wear a latex glove. One person on BYC described finding the opening as a third eyelid, once you find it, you should be able to feel the actual shell. If you have a small syringe, you can squirt some KY the opening, just be gentle, you don't want to tear anything.

Do you use liquid calcium?
Hoping for you Haunted.

Okay, update....Got the 500mg of calcium with D, KY, and an 18ga needle and syringe, just in case. She is back in the tub for the second time this evening. I took her out a bit ago and we can now see the egg crowning, for lack of a better term. Put her back in the water and just waiting for a bit to take her out again. That's when she seems to have the urge to push. She's had about half of the calcium and been lubed. Trust me, the calcium worked! I know calcium works on the muscles but I never thought to see it work that fast! 1/2 hour, wow. Okay, time to take her out and see if we can get any thing done. If not, I'll put her back into the tub.

Single and minus here as well. If I can get her to pass this egg I'll be slathering her with honey.

Okay, just read this...I cheated, I crushed the pill and mixed it with a small amount of water. I don't know if I could get her beak/bill, whatever it is, open. She has taken more than half of it now. How do you open their mouths???

Just took her out of the tub again and am going to give a break from it for a bit. The egg is crowning more but it's not out yet. I am going to lube her up somemore and give her a fighting chance to do it herself.

Please, please, please, give her a chance to pass the egg, I've heard of the needle technique, but the thought of doing it scares me to death, and I'm one of those that tube feeds and give shots and fluids.

When she's not in the tub, you could also try filling you bathroom with steam.
