My Sebastopol geese had their first successful hatch last week. Unfortunately, they tried swimming on an unusually cold day and only one survived. Today, one of my drakes was attacking the gosling while the geese parents just watched. I ran out and separated the gosling to clean it's wounds and evaluate. It's head is pretty beat up, but it is alert and drinking. It has been separated for about an hour and has been napping in my pocket. Should I return it to it's parents and just separate the ducks? Or should I get it a friend and raise them by hand? I'm pretty concerned that the gander didn't even attempt to stop the drake. I also won't be able to get a friend until tomorrow at the earliest and I'm worried it will pick on it with it's bald/red patches on its head from the attack.

Separate the ducks. Drakes are murderous to babies, goslings and ducklings.

As for wether you want to get the gosling a friend and raise them by hand, that’s up to you. If you think the parents aren’t protecting or caring for the gosling that might be the right thing to do.
