Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

I made progress on the older goslings attacking the younger front. I let Jasper and Snow out and brought out the 4 little ones. They actually moved around grazing as a group and Jasper and Snow only gave a few bites to the butts of the younger. It looked more like a "I'm the boss and don't you forget it" type thing. I am hopeful that I will be able to take the divider out of the pen soon.

No problem, I was raised with large breed dogs since I was a baby, and my sister is a vet tech who like me saves a few here and there. Between us we usually manage at home remedies to help them. Simple things likecourting the cone of shame on a dog and then applying used motor oil to treat mange and stuff. But neither of us is a dog trainer and we have budgets too.

Hate to say it, but it might be kinder to euthanize her than let her suffer if the leg won't heal well. And if she isn't spayed your looking at pups soon as well.

Now as you said, on to geese! Yesterday I noticed that Jasper has a scratch on the side of his bill/beak can that get infected? I think he got it from pulling on the chicken wire as I walk to the pen to let him out. He is Soo impatient, it's like he has to make sure I really am coming to let him out! So, should I do anything to treat the his bill?

Just make sure he has ACV in his water..that´ll help.
Re. the dog...the vets here refuse to put animals down that could be saved (or even can´t be). When no-one wants to pay out, the dogs are left to get on with it. I once asked a vet about a dog that was unwanted and that would probably be abandoned, and she said they wouldn´t put it down, they just let them get abandoned, and she said I won´t find a vet that would put an animal down. Great, eh? False care in my opinion. Well, I went back quickly today to see if I could find her, and she´d disappeared.
Hope the scratch heals ok...I´m sure it will.

Thanks, Patti.  She has the sweetest personality to match those big doe eyes.  I'm quite enchanted by her.


Congrats on fertile eggs developing!!  Don't feel bad.  She has plenty more eggs to sit on and hatch out.  And FYI, depending on your daytime temps, she may not need to sit on them long to get them to cooking temp and then if she has her nest built up well, the eggs will retain temp for a while without her sitting on them.

Congrats!!!  I'm about ready to kill my Canada gander as he is bullying all of my birds and taking over their favorite part of the pasture.  And based on the timing, the goose is still is laying mode and hasn't yet gone broody. 


Sorry to hear about the one gosling, but congrats on saving your other gosling!!!!  Hobbles work like a charm if done right away!


You can absolutely leave Dad with broody mom.  In fact, I have found my ganders to be slightly more trustworthy than my geese around baby goslings.


Hope you hatch babies this year.... but more importantly, I hope your geese stay healthy!!

4 greys and 1 white the white is the light one on the left.


Just had another white hatch early this morning and another maybe working it's way out. But I am having to help again....

Will have pictures of the new ones once finished hatching and drying.
