EDIT:ta say,, i had a my first game egg hatch 2 weeks ago, and had 2 more hatch yesterday, and 1 pose to be hatching tonight, and another in 2 days,, hehe,, these guys are soooo cool

LOL Well I wanted to avenge his death i really loved that guy..and too, that raccoon was huge...i knew it'd be after my moms two chickens next, or my quail so it had to go. It was a 22lb male.

Did you figure out what your guy is Jim? I tried to post pics of my roo the day you started this thread, but it wouldn't go through. My roo Charlie is about 6 months old, and about as big as your guy is. My bantie roos are only about 7 inches tall, when they stand up REAL tall. So I don't think yours is a bantie.
Here is my roo. He is standing by a 24" cage. (try to ignore all the junk...it's my dad's place and he is a packrat!! )

And this is one of my bantie roos. He is standing by a quart jar on the ground, and the opening behind him is about 6 " tall.

why not ask the person you got him from? he could tell you better then most. if he says "yard hatch" or "weed monkey" it means it was hatched by a hen running loose amongst his tied out roosters, so he don't know the full breeding.

the "leash" is called a tie cord or tether. to the guy in pennsylvania, you probably won't find them in your area, they only keep them on hand in areas with a lot of game breeders.

for cutting spurs. i've found dewalt disk grinders or dremel tools work best. the speed and friction from the spinning disk cauterizes the wound, thus no bleeding. and its quick.

the peacomb and "cornish" build everyone keeps referring to in this bird means he's probably got asil somewhere in the ancestry, perhaps way back. he could be from some line of "roundhead", which was (waaaaayyyyy back ) cross of english or irish game to asil or shamo. there's several lines of roundhead, one of which is the Lacy. they are colored similar to yours.

However, being a peacomb bird he could be a cross of about anything game, as peacomb is dominant (semi). could also be out of a peacomb line that is not a roundhead, such as one of the hatch families or a kelso.

hes a red game,,, and has a single comb it looks to me,, its jus "floppy" ,, and the lady i got him from had NO idea what he was,, her son brought him home, they stuck him in a small kennel, and there he stayed for 2 years,,, thats why his spurs were soooo long. i used a dremil with a cut-off disk, cut everything except the last inch, and there was no blood, you could see that it JUST barely got the tip of the inner spur,, and man did he love it.

well, regardless of the line he's a looker for sure. problem with gamefowl is there are hundreds of bloodlines out there that look the same. but the hardcore breeders treat each as if it was its own breed, literally.

to give an example, let's say a wheaton colored gamecock. under this description you'll find: Hatch, Kelso, Whitehackle, Pucketts, Gulls, Murphys, Shawlnecks, Narraganasetts, Clarets, Butchers......but that's far from the end of it. Let's then go down another knotch and talk Hatch. There's Blueface, Rose, Col. Givens, Mclean, Sandy, Gavilan, etc. Does it end there? Nope. Pick any of those above lines, then you gotta dig down into the breeder's strains. From there its down to particular yards (groups of related fowl) and from that down to pairs. In short, giving a definite answer as to what bloodline a gamecock is without much more than a picture is like you putting a picture up of your face and having people guess what your father and mother's last names were.

game chickens are like arabian horses. they can be the smartest animal to deal with, but also the most high spirited. you really got to try to get in their head and understand them to be able to give them the best care.

i just went and LOOKED at him ,, ya he has MORE then a single comb,, but people got me so confused on rose, pea, and the others i dont know what ta heck he has,, when the wifers gets home, i'll hold him and have her take a good pic of it,, then YOU can tell me lol,,,maybe i can get a good full body of him too,, he's kinda scittish still,, about how my grey was when i first got him lol, and i havent had much time to "play" with him much,,, of course his "high spirits" dont bother me,, im the kind that thinks if a roo of ANY kind dont have some attitude, he might as well be a hen

i talked with the lady i got him from again, and her son got him from a guy that got him from a guy,,,,,,, and so on,, guess he was to high spirited for them

i'd say he's gota peacomb/straight comb split. so that narrows it down to (mainly) Kelso, Hatch, Roundheads, maybe some Democrats, don't recall on those.

To me he looks like a Kelso or Roundhead. Kelso was a big breeder down in Texas years and years ago. When he died and his fowl were dispersed, anything on his yard got the name "Kelso" even though they were not all bred alike. He had many yards of fowl, each one probably bred a little different then the next. Some Kelsos had Roundhead blood in them, some had Hatch, etc. But who knows, Texas is a big state. There's Lacy, Woods, Norman, and Jarrett Roundheads down there, probably Bostons too. Several families of Hatch down there as well, some come from Texas, one of which I believe is the Bible Blueface line.
