Got meat?

Pics
Wow there big.
Thanks! This was my second-ever batch and they were actually a little smaller than my first, but I thought the size was perfect for us. These were I think between 5 and 6 lbs, while my first batch was between 6.5 and 8.5. All dressed weights.

I think the 4.5-6 lb is the sweet spot for me. Large but you can still roast a whole bird.

Good job on them meat birds !! I haven’t raised meat chickens in 4-5 years, I need to get a mess goin again.. I like to do 50-75 at a time it is a no brainer for putting a lot of chicken in the freeze.. maybe I’ll get my meat bird huts back out of the barn this winter and clean em up..

I’ve got a dozen overdue for processing and 18 over halfway…….im thinking of switching to rangers so my meatbirds will be more sustainable……the price of chicks and hatching eggs has gotten crazy this year!

Not to mention feed costs! My preferred kalmbach is cheaper now from my local mill than the cheapest meatbird from RK or TSC 😩

Low style hut.. my old back can’t take walkin bent over anymore.. I replaced this style with the taller dome type.. the grandkids are much more limber and can get in and out much better than me.. so I kept them, still have 2 of these..

Thanks! And you really should. Chicken from the grocery store just doesn't taste as good, and it's nice to raise your own if you have the means to.

Yeah I'm trying rangers for the first time this year! Got 7 on order from Meyer in September. Wish I could keep them (or a heritage breed) in a sustainable manner, but unfortunately I can't have roosters. That would be the way to go! Good luck with your meaties.

Most people seem to have a lot of good things to say about the rangers. My main worry is if they will be ready to process in 8-10 weeks because on my small urban property, I don't think I have enough space to tractor them for 12 weeks.
