Our first year of beekeeping we harvested 58 pounds from two new hives - it all depends on the season. Good luck with yours!

*jealous*!! We're specifically not allowed to keep bees where we are. Good luck, and congratulations!

We had bees and absolutely loved it. Our bees did end up moving out, possibly do to an ant infestation. I was too busy with other things to keep the legs of the table greased and ants got in. I plan on gathering a new swarm this spring.
One of the other benefits I experienced, was that after getting stung, my arthritis pains went away for about six months. Sure made getting stung a lot easier to put up with.

I went to a couple of outdoor "classes" for people interested in starting bees last year. The local hive inspector ran 4 classes- one for each season and what should happen with your hive. We didn't get a hive last year, more looking into how complicated it is to do.

I really want to get a hive this year, but I don't know if we will or not. We seem to have so many projects going on at a time.

Val, have you guys considered topbar hives? Soooo much simpler than the Langstroth hive...aka the Stacked white box hive.
