Oh good gracious! I would have had a massive melt down if I had grabbed it like you did. Wow!!! Here is what greeted me a couple weeks ago:

I screamed so loud I woke my husband up from a sound snoring sleep. The snake was pretty close to 6 foot cause his head and part of his body got caught up in the netting above the runs. Now each time I go to that door of the coop I get chill bumps and start breathing faster and my heart is racing.

Glad you didn't get hurt and I agree that the snake could swallow the hens head to get to the eggs if she is giving up a fight. YIKES!!!

Great snake stories, all. My hubby learned today that the grey ratsnake is terratorial, so that may be the only one for a while. I certainly hope so. We are old and don't need that much excitement!

We are wiping out a family of snakes, one by one! This 5 footer was curled up in 12"x12" nesting box. Needless to say, he ain't no more!
