It isn't my intention to tell someone HOW to be... but definitely my intent to share the truth about the law and the aspect considered "humane"... as people cannot change what they don't know about if they are misinformed.

Beyond that, people make their own decision whether we like it or not... and I usually DO quit wasting breath (or finger muscles) once it becomes clear that a poster is going to ignore any information given even if it's good. We all have reasons we do what we do. :)

OhZark... you are funny! :gig

Besides the preachiness of “educating” others ... it’s the whole “inhumane to relocate” thing that sets off my BS detector...

Do you know survival rates of relocated critters for certain... because you’ve relocated a large sample size of multiple species, in various regions, at various times of the year, and you tracked survival rates?

Or is this something you’ve read on the internet and now repeat in an effort to “educate”?

How did these folks that wrote what you read determine the success of relocating? did they work with a large population in various regions, times of year, etc.?

I’d like to see the data.... I’ve said it before, but the success and survival of a relocated critter likely varies wildly... there are too many variables at play to say that a relocated critter can’t survive, and is therefore inhumane...

Maybe I’ll do my own relocation study this fall :p

Btw... there’s a bobcat thread right now and that person mentioned relocating... somebody ought to scoot on over there and “educate” them too ;)

You dirty sinner ;)... you need some preaching to get yourself right, lol

I’m just teasing you, I just get a kick out of the way folks on BYC feel compelled to tell others how to be.

That is hilarious!!! Everyone is entitled to their opinions which is why I stated mine. I was getting rid of a feral cat issue next door and caught two opossums, relocated them too. It's not their fault humans took over and they are forced to find food in our back yard (or chicken coop)!

Please note... mine is not an opinion but considered the truth according to their evidence by authorities on humane treatment of animals. That is why I asked you to educate yourself on the subject. Have you called the canter and asked what they would actually say if you were dropping of a coon or anything else? People who relocate often do it because they think it's the most humane thing to do. They are OFTEN wrong. If you cannot dispatch or relocate LEGALLY, then you are encouraged NOT to trap.

All Nature preserves I know of are for a specific set of animals and not for drop offs from other areas to upset the balance.

I understand you expect backlash... I'm offering education on the subject as we are a community that is here not only to share our ways but learn from each other and hopefully or at least the lucky ones will see their minds expanded.

Relocation at 2-3 miles away as mentioned is basically a joke. But now if they read this public forum they can come searching your place when they are over ran with drop offs. :gig

Seriously though, I like your positive attitude. Thanks for sharing! :highfive:
You are correct about that one, just dumping an animal on any property including a nature center would be illegal. They are very aware and would rather have it relocated to their (?) acres of land than for me to discard of an animal. Just for reference, I have only had to relocate 2 opossums since owning my home and that was BEFORE I owned chickens (oh except for the coon family in my chimney, a professional removed them). I have not had a predator problem since owning chickens so have not needed to trap anything (yet).

You ever have those impulses that you know you can't act out? Yeah... My impulse? Assassinate every uncontained mammal with front facing eyes within 3 acres and napalm every ground burrow and hollow tree in that area, then as the neighbors searched for their missing pets and their kids cried, and the woods rose in black smoke and glowing embers, I would blare highland bagpipes from the loudest bluetooth speaker I could find...
This was so refreshing to read!! I thought that was just me that had these kinds of impulses...

Okay. Preaching, whatever... I'm detecting a pot stir-er. ;)

No good studies... but that a great question! I'll look into it. :pop
