Grain Freed Dog Feed Linked To Heart Disease!

I wish I could feed her a raw meat diet. Then I’d be feeding to 60 pound dog a raw meat diet. Unfortunately at that point to humans couldn’t eat

I have been feeding a raw diet to my dogs and cats for close to 20 years. It has been more expensive than feeding dog food, but my vet bills are next to nothing, not to mention all the time saved not having to take care of numerous ailments. And they poop less. And they shed less. And they smell less. And they are happier. I had a cat that was very, very cranky. Always biting and growling, until he started eating a raw diet. A dog needs 2-3% of their weight for food. So, a 60lb dogs would eat 1-2lbs a day. Some smaller breeds eat more than 2-3%. My cattle dog mix and my terrier mix each eat as much as my Golden. My Aussie mix eats about half that. If you have a Sam's Club near you, you can get meat at bulk prices. Buy a freezer and stock up when there are sales. There are raw feeding Yahoo groups you could search for to help.

I don't know where you're located but if you have a local meat locker that's been a gold mine for me. Folks take hogs, goats, cattle, chickens, deer, etc there to be butchered. They go down a cut sheet and just mark all the cuts that they want back from their animal. There's a lot of meat that people don't want back so our meat locker packages it and sells it cheap. I just got this bag of beef bones weighing 6.5 lbs & covered in meat for $5. So it's comparable in cost to the dog food, but he eats less when it's the raw meat. I'm sure it's because the nutrition is more readily available in its natural form. And oh my goodness does he enjoy it! Might be worth looking into.

I live in 20 min from a grocery store and unfortunately none further in town. But maybe I’ll ask around the town I work in. It’s bout an hour away but there every day any way. Not matter what the protein is plant or meat based dog food... natural real deal is the best choice if available. Maybe a mix of both. Something I think I really need to look into further. Because even if my other dog doesn’t have allergies I feed her a healthy diet also I bet they do love it!

That's a good point. My cat has sensitive stomach issues, I wonder if more meat ingredients would help that sort of thing.
I have a cat with a sensitive stomach too. And another cat with terrible allergies. More meat in her diet did seem to help. Her stomach still a little sensitive but it seemed to help a lot. On the days she’s not doing so well as far as my stomach I give him chicken and rice for a couple meals And it seems to mellow him out

By dog absolutely goes ga-ga over corn. And when she gets sick, the vet has me put her on a white rice and chicken diet. I agree with Sour, everything in moderation. Now, if I could only get her to stop eating tissues.
Mine loves corn too. Just even a small amount of corn definitely does not love her. Other than specific allergies and I agree Sourland. is correct. Everything in moderation. Just like for humans

I like this response...

It is the same information tempered with the idea to wait for more information. The FDA only lists 4-5 cases which is not a large enough sample size to determine actual causation.
If it ain't broke...
Yes, that seems to be a little more in perspective. And I enjoyed researching and learning some more stuff in regards to different dog food ingredients. :thumbsup

Thing is... I'm NOT trying to get people to switch their diets... we all have reasons we do what we do.

I'm NOT ever going to a raw food diet... it simply isn't convenient or conducive to my lifestyle. I do buy dog feed with meat as the main or near main ingredient. But I JUST learned "meat" is in large part water and "meat meal" can have 300% more protein.

Just bringing the conversation onto people's radar so they can be informed of *POSSIBLE* issues.

And I enjoy that you share this information with us! I know you’re not trying to get anybody to switch the diet or trying to say anybody is not feeding their pet correctly. You just wanted to share information you have come across. And that is always appreciated!
