We wear cowboy hats here guess where?
So i wanted to know i'm hatching out some chicks and when i started going through the seemingly endless information on how to raise the chicks and i something hit me. The way the "experts" say how to raise chickens is nothing like the way my grandma does it or how how her grandma did it. For instance the feed schedule that the "experts" tell you should be is something like this chick starter, starter/finisher, then mash and every now and then scratch for a treat sometimes or horrible things will happen to your chickens (malnutrition, feather loss, death, the works etc). My grandma (who is still alive and raising chickens) doesn't believe in feeding her chickens anything other then scratch and crushed oyster shells for calcium. Her 32 birds lived with few problems until her new neighbor moved in with his bird loving dogs (insert bloody chicken massacre scene here). My grandma's chickens looked very good for the most part except for some minor pecking issues so who's right my grandma for the so called "experts"?

Both. If they're going to be cooped up all the time, then the experts, though here it's starter, grower, and then either finisher or layer feed... but I'm assuming with the massacre that occurred your Grandma allows her birds to free range which gives them many nutritional options.

We just do starter/grower and whatever they get free ranging, which is a alot! When they start laying I will put a little calcium supplement on the side. I'm not going to buy scratch or anything like that... I don't see the point. If its inferior to regular feed, why bother? Keep it simple but be smart about it.

I'm wondering where you are finding chicken experts? I've never met one of those yet.

My granny fed corn meal to her chicks. I feed chick starter with layer ration but occasionally I've just fed layer ration. Both granny's and my chickens have thrived and went on to live long and productive lives, so I say mix and match, find your own way and realize that there are no "experts" out there....especially not on BYC. I'd sooner say our grandma's were experts before I'd say anyone here is.

My way, free range 2-3 hrs a day, but will not free range if I'm not home or time to check on them.
Feed, scratch, oatmeal, mealworms and whatever they get free ranging. They are five weeks and eat a lot! Once they are older I will add oyster shells. I live in a snowless climate lol so they will be over to go outside year round
