So i wanted to know i'm hatching out some chicks and when i started going through the seemingly endless information on how to raise the chicks and i something hit me. The way the "experts" say how to raise chickens is nothing like the way my grandma does it or how how her grandma did it. For instance the feed schedule that the "experts" tell you should be is something like this chick starter, starter/finisher, then mash and every now and then scratch for a treat sometimes or horrible things will happen to your chickens (malnutrition, feather loss, death, the works etc). My grandma (who is still alive and raising chickens) doesn't believe in feeding her chickens anything other then scratch and crushed oyster shells for calcium. Her 32 birds lived with few problems until her new neighbor moved in with his bird loving dogs (insert bloody chicken massacre scene here). My grandma's chickens looked very good for the most part except for some minor pecking issues so who's right my grandma for the so called "experts"?
