I raise mine mainly for eggs. Same with my chickens. I'm actually allergic to meat, so not roasted quail for me! :p

I do keep them as pets as well though. They're just so funny and cute!

Thank you for sharing the information about a perfect meat portion being 4 ounces. My Jumbo Brown Coturnix are 11-12 ounces live weight at 8-10 weeks old. Butchered (full bird with bones) are weighing 4.5-5.5 ounces. So about 4 ounces minus the bones.
Which is perfect for a single serving of meat. I usually eat one quail unless I
make something that I really like.

Dakkangjeong is one recipe where I can't eat just one. I use quail quarters instead of chicken wings.

Wow! I just received two nasty private messages from a “Project Manager” of BYC telling me not to use Zach’s name in this forum because his cage recommendations are for commercial sales and because she is friends with him in the real world. She then kicked me out of the private message/deleted it. (I will not share her name. Perhaps she will rethink what she sent me and try to fix it).

Wow, just wow! I was excited to be here. It’s starting to look like an unhealthy community.
I sent you the message on accident and it wasn't nasty.
It simply said to not throw Zack's name around as if he were your friend when he's not BUT it wasn't meant for you. It was actually meant for the other person who keeps bad mouthing Zack.

I am sorry I sent it to you on accident. As soon as I realized I sent it to the wrong person, I deleted it.

Thank you for the kindness of your reply and for fixing it. (Please understand that the private messages felt nasty to me because you have no idea whether I am friends with Zach in the real world and what we have discussed. Now, I understand that the message wasn’t intended for me. Also, I have tremendous respect and good will towards Zach as well as the members of this community who are sharing information and supporting each other on our journey with quail).

Thank you for your explanation and for fixing the miscommunication. I really appreciate it. ❤️

I wasn't paying close attention to who was posting the ugly messages. I accidentally clicked to start the Convo with you instead of the one that has been bad mouthing Zack. I'm am sorry.

That makes perfect sense to me! I very much appreciate that you all actively manage and participate in this forum.

I can tell you are doing your very best to have some community rules that foster a healthy community! ❤️

It is so hard to figure out where to draw the line. There is a spectrum ranging from spirited debate at one end to troll at the other end, and a lot of shades between them.

I love our great Constitution including our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom to assemble.

I also have an extraordinary passion and curiosity about communities of practice, bodies of knowledge, and full-blown self-regulated professions. Humbly, I am a national authority on the subject. It is my life’s work.

Emerging professions, that typically start as communities which become guilds or trades, have a grittiness about them. They definitely have spirited debates!

I love our Constitution including our First Amendment rights. I also love the ethnographic data and communications in Communities of Practice such as this Forum. It’s part of the history of how the community evolves and grows.

That said, I always have a tool in my pocket that one of mentors taught me years ago. He taught me a simple lesson: “You don’t have to respond to that!” It was a terrific counter-message to how I was raised which was: “You better answer me when I’m talking to you!” 😂🤣🤣
So now the tool in my pocket is a simple quip: “Don’t feed the trolls!” 👹

It strikes the right balance for me. I honor our God-given rights under our great Constitution and can simply choose not to respond to someone who crosses the line into being a troll.

Better for history to record the effigy.

Can we get a vegetarian option in the poll?

I thought I was getting into raising quail for meat and eggs, now it's just eggs and the pleasure of their bird ways (and meat for my fam whenever I reach critical roo population).

So more "pets who make food" than "non-pets who are food."
