Granny's gone and done it again

Saw a red mite on the light cover in silkies pen this am. Does sevin dust kill them? Are they too little to use it in their pen. I have diatomaceous earth. Will that do it by it's self?
There are other bugs that look sort of like red mites, but are something different. If you truly have red mites, the only thing that has worked for me is flea spray (intended for bedding, etc.) in the coop... roosts, especially where they attach to the walls, all the cracks and crevices. They live and lay their eggs in the coop, not on the chickens, and crawl out at night to feed on the sleeping chickens. Go out with a flashlight after dark and see if they are crawling around. Infestations can grow really fast... they are terrible.

Treating chickens with Ivermectin will kill the mites once they bite.

It was so good to see granny and her family .lisa and rod again too...They mean the world to me..i love all them and feel like family and felt at home..Granny has a broody hen that kills her babies so granny gets them when they hatch and takes them in..one hatched when she was showing me,she reached it to me and i put it in my coat pocket.well i took it with me when i left, she cried all the way to lexington..i didn't know if she was cold or hungry or what was wrong..DD's landlady has mother hens so she put it under one and all was ok..she told me just come and get it when i was ready to go..i went in her coop this morning and it was dead she had got out and was under a tarp..

Sorry about your special little baby.

The Serama chicks are so small and fragile. Sometimes it seems the ones that cry nonstop have other things wrong with them, so it might just have been fate.

I'm so jealous glad you got a chance to meet granny and hopefully there will be another time and another chick (or 3 or 4).

Sorry about your chick Danna. Did you see my cochins? Down to meat and bone on one of them.

no i didn't see them..haven't caught up yet but did read about your fundraiser you did good..your baby chicks here are growing and beautiful..Lisa said the one i showed you the other day was a girl ccl....i love granny and lisa they are the best people i have met..Tom was happy to see us and was feeling good except for his neck hurting..Robert and Konner are both so handome and Rod is great Lisa has trained him good lol..jack of all trades...good man he is...

My suspicions that the Austrolorp is a cockerel are growing. Little wattles are starting to come in.

So I am stuck with the dilemma of only having one new pullet to introduce to the main flock, OR going to get another chick (or 2) and have too many. Such a dilemma... They had a few 2 wk old Speckled Sussex at the feed store when I got layer pellets yesterday... any thoughts???

the sussex is what my DD got me this morning..i'm not good at this but it looks like a roo to me...

it did cry all the time like it was hurting..i hate that it died..You need to go see granny..she's the best..lisa too...I will go back when i can,,it was like leaving my family and not knowing when i would see them again..
I would love to... you didn't get to stay nearly long enough! I am constantly planning and plotting about going out for a visit, but the timing is terrible right now, with MIL not doing well. If I ever did, maybe I could fly out, rent a car and pick you up, then we could drive out together and you could stay longer. We could have a sleepover at granny's!!

Quote: Even worse, it acts like a roo... charges at your hand when you reach in the cage.

I have had one female EE chick do this, but other than that, that behavior has always been male. I have terrible luck getting sexed pullet males! Do you like the sussex chicks? The breed description sounds perfect... calm, quiet, excellent layers... then of course we all know the wonderful Sparkles Nugget.
