Did you all just hear a HUGE rush of air?  That would be me finally heaving a giant sigh of relief --- it has been a happy day indeed for me! 

So, haven't said anything, but I've been going through some pretty major stress for the last couple of months - I had found a lump at the beginning of December, put off dealing with it before Christmas, and was secretly hoping it would just go away...when it didn't I finally had to tell DH and make a doctor's appointment and for the last two weeks  have been going through a gauntlet of appointments and tests and scans and, finally, on Tuesday a biopsy.......just got the call back from the breast center that the pathology report came back ALL CLEAR!!!!!  

So happy that you got good news!

Our school has a "free" table of donated books for children who didn't bring money. I get angry when I see kids bring in a dollar or less, but I see the parents and they smoke, covered in tattoos and piercings. But I feel like the older ones should have some money from chores or saved up. I seen a kid bring in $75 for the book fair in the fall.

Yes , it is sad to see where some parents priorities are. Did you know if a child doesn't read by third grade it will probably never read.

Yes , it is sad to see where some parents priorities are. Did you know if a child doesn't read by third grade it will probably never read.

No, but I know a few that will prove that true. Also know several 3rd graders that never learned to tie their shoes. But I also know of a sibling pair that were put in lower grades (5th and 7th although they were much older) and had never been to school or taught anything at home. They were kept at home to help on the farm until children services were called. They both can read.

Was it a Scholastic fair? The prices are retail, but it is supposed to be a fund raiser for the school. Ours was dedicated completely to the library since it had no budget to buy new books. Librarians could get half of what was earned in new books or a quarter of the earnings in cash or a combo of both. Librarian would take some cash and hit up the used book stores and thrift shops, so she did very well. I ran the book fair for several years since it supported the library for all the kids, even the ones who did not have money. We did not sell things to kids during the school day unless they came in at lunch with a note from home, most sales were parents before or after school. It was really popular and made a ton of money for the library. But glad my tenure is over, as it took up over 2 weeks of my life, 16 hr+ days.

Yes it was a Scholastics fair...we have them twice a year for five days.
The school librarians gets a percentage of the sales to buy stuff for the library.
She is not allowed to buy books from where ever she chooses which really sucks because she knows/has been to the goodwill for personal books.
What really drives me wild is when I volunteer to work in the library to help with what even needs to be done and she puts me to work on the "discards".
I basically have to mark them up with a black permanent marker...wrist DISCARD on the from and back and on the inside of the front cover....Most of these books are fairly new looking..not in bad shape at all.
They are all given back to the school district who then auctions them off....to stores like the goodwill.
I and the librarian wish she was allowed to give them away to kids who need them, but the school district wont let her...drives me bananas.

We, us parents that can, are not allowed to donate books to the library...
Isn't that foolish!
For years, books are what my kids pass out at Christmas...not candy.

Neither could I. I was a zombie at the end of the day and spent Sunday's scouring the jobs section of the paper.

Book fair stuff was strictly as a parent volunteer. I volunteered most years but only ran it for 3. Best year we sold $15,000 worth of books in a week. crazy.

Our school barely sells a few hundred dollars worth...including what the teachers buy.
Scholastics sends an employ to run the cash register and for two years straight I have been the only helper besides the librarian.

You know ifs so funny...sad I mean....most parents are in line after school to pick their child up...which to me means they probably don't work...I mean how many people can leave work in the middle of day and sit in line for 30 plus minutes to pick up your child. Then why can they not volunteer a few hours a school year to help???

Yeah it's a good size. It's just a very poor area. She had to get rid of almost a quarter of the books in the library when she arrived because of mold. We spent 2 months cleaning and organizing the shelves because books were just put wherever. There are some paperback books but they don't get checked out often and the kids tear them apart. If I could use a grant on Amazon I could get so many more books for the money. She had a few donationed last year but the kids aren't big readers so they didn't have books at home. AR has been a struggle because we just don't have enough books for everyone in the level they need.

I spend a couple hours a week putting books back in the correct place....we...I say this like it's part mine...lol..manage to keep the books in pretty good order...the problem is when the older kids come in before school to help put away books...they just put them anywhere! arggggg.
