CRD is another name for MG (mycoplasma gallisepticum) and yes MG, infectious bronchitis, avian encephalomyelitis (AE,) and probably others can transfer through the egg. Fortunately, only a small amount of those will hatch.

ya, i remember that being a bad hatch. the runt lived about 6 months if i am remembering it right. green goo in the egg

mrsc, today is day 17 and i am besides myself .

i put them into the bator on their sides yesterday. after i took the turner out the temp. did drop some. it is a metal turner and it has stayed down. it is at or about 98.5. i dont want to mess with it at this point. they were all 3 alive ! and the other eggs are in the new bator. the one that i was able to candle seems to be very active in there . I really am hoping the first 3 hatch because they will be the only ones not related. i upped the humidity a little to 50 % i am going to wait til tonight or tomorrow probably to put the humidity up futher. It really sucks that i cant do pictures. if i can get my friend to i will. the eggs are so tiny . i am trying to think of something to compare the size to. a golf ball but not round of course. i just cant think of something. they also did not look ready. very large veins were showing and maybe 1/4th in. of space still not counting air cell.

I would like to address something that as far as i can tell is a chicken myth. and that is catatonic chickens. once they go to sleep they wont move. even though the eyes open their not seeing, you can pick them off of the roost and do what you want, or rats can chew their toes off and they wont feel it. I have to say, and i have not read anything on this, that I think that is all bunk ! Unless all my chickens have a sleeping disorder they wake up just fine. I cant go in there and "move them" with out disturbing them they dont like it one bit and if they were catatonic they sure wouldnt be biting me for messing with them. easier to move? yes, cant feel a rat eating them ? that would take a lot to make me believe that. what do you guys think? any experinces with chopping a chickens head off while it is "sleeping" ?

Granny, you probably already know, but the eggs getting a little cold will not hurt as much as too warm. When we were going through crazy broody nest swapping and trying to remove unmarked eggs from the nests, I accidentally took out a marked egg that had been set for several days. That egg sat out on the counter all night and got down into the lower 60°! My son saw the egg on the counter in the morning

and we thought, what the heck, and put it back under a hen. IT HATCHED! On time too. Makes me think those that are going to hatch will hatch, given half a chance, and those not meant to be will die, no matter how much coddling they get.

Hoping you have 3 meant-to-be's!!!

No catatonic chickens here. There was someone on the other side of the valley who had a chicken that got some toes chomped off by rats at night. She solved the problem by removing a roosting spot too close to the protective wire mesh so the rats couldn't reach the tootsies. Consensus on the local thread was that the chicken was sleeping deeply and was not awakened by the gnawing. It also explains why skunks (or possums- whichever animal eats only the innards trough the vent) can go from hen to hen along the roost with no alarm being raised.

Fact or fiction?

what a long day. I broke out a sweat with some hot dogs and frozen fries. for some reason i had a taste for hot dogs. I dont even like them but i ate 2 ! collected eggs , got 4 big ones and have sit here the most of the day. had my snack of cream cheese and ritz crackers with a big fat olive on top with an ice cold glass of milk and except for getting an anatomy lesson on facebook ( totally uncalled for) it has been a nice boring day. the breeder i got my serama eggs from had /has some hatching and he put a short video on facebook. it is just the top of the cream ! a little mottled chick still a little wet and the size of his thumb. wish you all could see it. the morning brings day 18 oh, and my 20th wedding anniversary. guess we will go to dinner. far cry from me wanting to renew our vows but food is good !
