I have seen a chicken frozen to the ground. I think she got stepped on by my milk cow and laid there all night. When it rained on her feathers they froze to the ground. I cut her wing feathers loose with my pocket knife and took her to the house. She laid up under the wood cook stove for a couple of hours. She finally limped out. We filled her up with corn bread and put her back in the hen house. She limped for a couple of weeks, but was fine by spring.

That is amazing! Poor girl, glad she was ok. I bet that wood stove felt wonderful!

Hope you haven't floated away today with all this rain we got - I would almost rather see snow than rain at this point, SO tired of sloshing through the muck to get to/from the barn.  This darn Indiana clay makes for some nasty, boot sucking mud (I threw a shoe today, lol, made for one wet, COLD foot because I was already committed to the step when I realized my boot wasn't there anymore).

Oh no, if it wasn't such a miserable feeling, it would be funny.

We've had the worst rain today, too. Earlier in the week I took all the tin from my run so the sand could get some sunshine and dry out. BIG MISTAKE. All the feeders are flooded, inches of standing water everywhere. I put feed on the porch so they could stay dry and saw one of my layers with bloody vent feathers. I brought her in and realized she was basically oozing lice. Her whole bottom was just black with congealed blood. So I soaked her in warm water and lathered her with dish soap; I washed, rinsed, and drained the water three times. Then I got the blow dryer and fluffed her up, and the lice were STILL falling off. I feel like absolutely the worst chicken mom ever. :hit

I'm letting her stay in overnight, and in the morning I'm going to dust her good. The others are too wet, and I don't know what to do about them. :hit :hit :hit

No your not, it happens to all of us. Just purchased Seven for my flock yestetday. Noticing some itching when I go in the coop after dark to shut it down. I don't remember if I got them dusted before winter set in.

I missed dusting this fall because I was in ND. I did get them wormed just before I left. As sick as they got while I was gone, worming them before I left is probably the only thing that kept them from dying!

The sun is out! :celebrate It's a weak winter sun but I don't even care. I got out and got everyone dusted; the one who stayed in overnight was pecking the glass shower door this morning to get out. :D Some didn't have any and some were pretty bad, but none as bad as the hen yesterday. So I guess that's a success?

The bator was running hot yesterday, so I gave it a nudge. It dropped a few degrees and ran cool all night. That's the second time it's happened. Today is day 6, so I'm candling tomorrow night. I'm not throwing any out, just to be sure. I guess I'll learn my lesson eventually. :/

not gonna hurt to run cold for a few, HOW HOT IS IT ?? It is soo hot..... I seen 2 trees fighting over a dog. why is it changing? kids? normal culprit. I just run to town and picked up the heat bulbs and the babies are outside now. they seemed pleased with the new digs. throwing pine every where. You know , we have all ways called baby chicks doodles. all my growing up yrs. seems odd to me to call them babies.

forgot to tell you guys, swedish rooster dont like my cooking either ! decided he better eat. every time he sees me he runs for the food dish.
